Tunstall (William, son of Marmaduke Tunstall of Scargill, b. 1613) Letter signed to his father in law Sir Edward Radclyffe, 1p., folio, “Wicliffe this”, 22nd March [1644], referring to his recent ?captivity, “I am mighttey glade of your fredum, for I was much afraid of it when I herde that the Frenchman was trested with it fearing that he might have bene as long in his returne, as he was a cuming”, an attack by the Scots, “Sir upon weddensday gon a sennet the Scotes set upon a littel fort at the Sheldes and was forsed backe but the horse would not let the foute run... the next asalt being the same daye they brought of there men but with greate losse to them tinmouth [Tynemouth] Castel & the fort playing hotley upon them & it was thought they lost towe hundred men that daye, but they gave it not over soe for the last weddensdaye they set upon it againe, & gaineed the fort & five eyron pese of Ordenance in it our men fleying doune to a penisse... But the penisse dischargeing sume ordenan[c]e at the Scotes they retreated & it is said they lost 3 houndred men at the takeing of it” and news of Prince Rupert, “be yont neworke [Newark], it haveing bene besegeed it is said that prince Rupert hath raised the seige there”, manuscript draft of the marriage settlement of Sir William Fenwick and Elizabeth Radclyffe (daughter of Sir Edward) on verso, fold, slightly browned, small stain.

A good civil war letter highlighting the little known Scottish Covenanting campaign of 1644 under Lord Leven. Parliament authorized the Scots to raise an army at their expense and they crossed into Northumberland on 19 January 1644. They had a skirmish with royalist troops at Boldon Hills near Sunderland on 7-8 March and the subsequent withdrawal of the royalist commander Newcastle allowed the Scots to attack South Shields Fort, at the mouth of the Tyne. The first, unsuccessful, attack on the Fort was on Friday 15 March and the later, successful attack on Wednesday 20 March. The Scots then returned to the environs of Sunderland, where there was another inconclusive encounter with the duke of Newcastle at Hilton on 24-25 March.

William Tunstall married Mary, daughter of Sir Edward Radclyffe.
