Sir William Fenwick and Elizabeth Radclyffe (daughter of Sir Edward) on
verso, fold, slightly browned, small stain. A good
civil war letter highlighting the little known Scottish Covenanting campaign
of 1644 under Lord Leven. Parliament authorized the Scots to raise an army at
their expense and they crossed into Northumberland on 19 January 1644. They
had a skirmish with royalist troops at Boldon Hills near Sunderland on 7-8
March and the subsequent withdrawal of the royalist commander Newcastle
allowed the Scots to attack South Shields Fort, at the mouth of the Tyne. The
first, unsuccessful, attack on the Fort was on Friday 15 March and the later,
successful attack on Wednesday 20 March. The Scots then returned to the
environs of Sunderland, where there was another inconclusive encounter with
the duke of Newcastle at Hilton on 24-25 March. William
Tunstall married Mary, daughter of Sir Edward Radclyffe. |
