(28 INCHES X 21 INCHES) VELLUM (PARCHMENT) INDENTURE BEING A DEED OF
SETTLEMENT OF THE STUBB HOUSE ESTATE IN Huge
(28 inches x 21 inches) vellum (parchment) manuscript Indenture being a Deed
of settlement (Jointure and Portions) of the Stubb
House Estate, County Durham and other properties and land in the Parish and
Manor of Bowes in Yorkshire and in the Parish of Cockfield,
Durham. Dated the 23rd of August 1884. (Queen Victoria 1837-1901). The
indenture is between John Harrison Stanton (the father), John Harrison
Stanton (the son). The terms od the Settlement are
that John Harrison Stanton and his eldest son make provision for Mrs Stanton
and her children. The sum involved is Seventeen Thousand Three Hundred Pounds
(£17,300). This approximates to $3,750,000 at present day value. The
Stanton's were the Lords of the Manor and held large holdings in both Durham
and Yorkshire. Other earlier Indentures are recited and other persons
mentioned in the document. Decorative
title, red-ruled borders and scalloped upper edge. The document bears a red
embossed revenue stamp with silver escutcheoning
and Royal Cipher of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) for Ten Shillings (10/-) dated
the 27th of August 1884. The foot of the document bears four fine red wax
seals on green silk threaded tabs with a dog motif. The seals bear the
signatures of John Harrison Stanto (the father),
John Harrison Stanto (the eldest son and heir),
Thomas Harrison Stanton of Southampton and James Munro Doctor of Medicine.
The reverse of the document bears five manuscript endorsements with
additional signatures. Atractive calligraphy and
fully legible throughout. An interesting and detailed 19th century vellum
indenture of Settlement with embossed revenue stamp, RoyalmCipher
and superb red wax seals which will appeal to the collector of legal,
financial and real estate documents as well as to the collector of unusual
and decorative documents. The document will look superb mounted and framed. I
have provided images of the upper left portion of the document (decorative
title), two images of the lower left and lower right of the document with the
seals and signatures and enlargements of the revenue stamp, Royal Cipher and
two of the seals. |

English vellum indenture dated 1878 during the reign of Queen Victoria being
the conveyance of a dwelling on Ripon Street in Gateshead in the County of
Durham. Features nine red wax seals and one large embossed seal of the Brick
and Stone Company of Newcastle and signed by directors and its Chairman. The
additional parties include Sir Walter Charles James, a Baronet, of Kent and
his wife Dame Sarah Caroline James and noted as the Seller. Others include
names of Cruickshanks, Carr, Clayton, Herdman, and France with some denoted as Builders and
Contractors. Nicely penned with fancyt printed
vignette, blue revenue stamp with insert, tax stamp, and nice docketing on

2-PAGE INDENTURE - lease of a BREWERY in SUNDERLAND with INVENTORY NO RESERVE
This is an unusual, 2-page, paper indenture concerning the lease for nine
years of a Brewery at a rental of £30 per year. It is dated the 10th November
1802 and is between John Wright of the parish of Bishop Wearmouth,
Durham of the one part and James Mackintosh "of Sunderland near the
Sea", Hugh Miller and William Troutbeck of the
other part. It concerns "All that Brewery Malting Middingstead
Stable and part of a Shed where the Dray usually Stood ...." in Horns
Lane, Sunderland. Particular mention is made of the Pump and Malt Mill and
there is, of course, considerable further detail in the two pages. On these
pages are a total of 3 impressed revenue stamps and 2 paper duty stamps as
well as 4 red wax seals by the signatures. In addition, and attached to the
second page is a SCHEDULE of the contents of the brewery with a further
revenue and paper duty stamp. The schedule lists the main items in the Brewhouse, the High Cellar, the Low Cellar, the Mill
House and the Malt House. Size. The document is approx. 29" wide x
19" high. Condition. Some small cracks on junctions of folds, a little dustmarking but generally in very good condition with the
usual folding creases. |

x 1686 DOCUMENTS on VELLUM and PAPER concerning CONSLIDE in DURHAM with SEALS
NO RESERVE These are two, very early, related documents dated December 1686 concerning
CONSLIDE in Durham which may be related to the later Consett.
One is on vellum and is an obligation bond and the other, handwritten on
strong paper, an agreement giving permission to convey water to the corn
mill. The principal names concerned are George Baker and Thomas Teasdaile. Both retain their original red wax seals; that
on the paper document being an excellent impression of a swan. Size. The
vellum document is approx. 10" wide x 6" high and the other approx.
7" wide x 11.5" high.. Condition. 314
years old and in superb condition with the usual folding creases. |

very attractive and interesting vellum Obligation Bond document hand written
in Latin and English dated 14th November 1717 during the reign of King George
I between William Ettricke & William Ettricke of Sunderland by the Sea Gentlemen and Mark

High Sheriff of the said County. Other names mentioned include: Dav Dixon & Wm Cooper A very clean document with
small triangular section missing. Otherwise, in excellent condition with
usual long-term storage folds. The missing section (approx 27mm x 15mm x
23mm) would appear to be original as all text is written around this flaw.
Written in both Latin and English. Comprising a single sheet of vellum
approx. 14” x 8” with all text fully legible for transcription. Bearing three

the Eighteenth Year of the Reign of His present Majesty for repairing the
High Road leading from Borough Bridge in the County of York, through North Allerton in the same County, to Croft Bridge on the River
Tees; and from thence through Darlington in the County of Durham, to the City
of Durham; and for making the same more effectual" "Whereas
by an Act...several Tolls or Duties were granted and made payable, and divers
Powers given to the Trustees impowered to put the
said Act in Execution....for Fifteen Miles together, laden with Caols and Cinders, which do great Damage to the said
Road, and by the said Act are exempt from paying Tolls or Duties...being
Fifty three Miles in length, is still in many Parts thereof in a ruinous

repairing the same lying at a great Distance from many Parts of the said
Road)... This

Durham. Dated the 10th day of April 1874. Property: All the several mines,
veins, beds, seams, measures and strata of coal, ironstone and other minerals
mentioned in the attached 2 page schedule in the fields of Brampton,
Derbyshire. The schedule list many named veins of coal and the field names
under which the coal lies. A very
interesting document for those interested in the history of coal mining.
Medium: Handwritten in English on vellum. Condition: The revenue stamps have
been cut out of the vellum leaving a small hole affecting a few words of the
text. However, this does not appear to affect the interpretation of the
