Cafferata
(D.M) ALBUM illustrating a trip in Devon made by two ladies on a motorbicycle
in 1922. Album of stiff buff paper, size 6" x 8", wraps, silk tie,
11 leaves, illustrated on both sides with exquisite and witty watercolours of
a professional quality, heightened with chalk, showing the adventures of the
lady motorcyclists. Each leaf has 3-5 square or oblong paintings, with black
border, rounded corners, each page titled (e.g. 'Clovelly', 'Dartmeet') as
well as each picture ('The Road to Dartmouth', 'Arrival at the Lutterell Arms
Dunster' 'An Incident on Countisbury', etc.). Loosely inserted is a portrait
of the artist and her friend in non-cycling dress. October 1922. £230.00 ¶
The names on the front wrap are 'W.F. Elliott and D.M. Cafferata.' The whole
trip was from Nottingham (Eastwood) to Devon, but most of the illustrations
cover Devon. The ladies seem to have been accompanied much of the way by
gentlemen in an elegant silver Sunbeam car. Illustrations include Berry Pomeroy,
Dartmeet, Clovelly, Goodrington, Hartland Point, Parracombe, steam roller
stuck in ditch on Exmoor, Hounds near Dunster. One small picture of Mrs Curry
and her dogs has been rather viciously scribbled out. The whole album has a
very attractive period feel. |

An
interesting Indenture dated 24th October 1780 during the reign of King George
III, between Henry Tuckfield of Fulford in the County of Devon Esquire of the
one part and John Copplestone of Thowerton in the County of Devon yeoman
regarding a property called Roulstones Cottage and lands including an Orchard
and a Herb Garden in Thowerton. Other names mentioned include:- George
Upcott, John Smith, Mary Smith, Mary Paul, William Paul & Henry Tuckfield,
Generally a clean document with minor discolouration along the usual
long-term storage folds. Part of Vignette has been cut away from the document
and six, small jagged marks pierce the sheet. I have no idea whether this was
an act of vandalism, or a way of showing the agreement was met and void.
Comprising a single folded sheet approx. 30” x 24” with all text fully
legible for transcription. Bearing a single red wax seal countersigned by
Tuckfield and a blue single embossed revenue stamp with single lead
escutcheon. |
