A vellum/parchment single page will with probate certificate. The will is that of William Bates who was of Blackburn, Lancs when he made it but then moved to Melbourne in Derbyshire where he apparently died.  He was a 'Protestant Dissenting Minister' and left everything to his wife Harriett who was his executrix. The documents are in very good condition.  There are the usual fold creases and some grubby marks on the outside, as is expected on documents of this age.

A 1786 manuscript relating to a release regarding buildings and various parcels of land in the county of Stafford. The parties involved are William Henry Wybberley of Woodhead, Derby gent and others, releasing Francis Whitgreave esquire. The others are Ann his wife, George Merry and Gilbert Merry all of which are three of the younger children of Thomas Henry the Elder. Further details are given about where they live and what job they do. The buildings and parcels of land are in Dearnsdols? Woollaston, Haughton, Blakehough, Denrington, Colon Clanford, in the several parishes of Haughton, Bradley and Seighford all in the county of Stafford. It recites an indenture made in 1753. It gives a lot of details regarding family history and the legal requirements of various parties and how those positions have changed with time. It then states that Francis Whitgreave will pay the above parties six hundred pounds in return for them consenting to a release.

A large manuscript on vellum measuring 2 feet 7 inches by 1 foot 10 inches. An interesting document though in poor condition it contains a wealth of family history. The vellum is worn with several holes and tears appearing along the central crease. The document has been damaged by water resulting in staining with some of the words being faded or lost, though most are readable. Though also spoilt by water there is a blue stamp on the side and four wax seals with signatures along the base.

DESCRIPTION: This is a letter written from Downing Street on April 1st 1835 by the Prime Minister of the day Robert Peel.  It is written in his hand and signed by him. It has an unconditional 100% guarantee of being genuine. 4 pages, 2 of which are blank. It was written 7 days before he resigned as Prime Minister on April 8. 1835, and hints at the forthcoming decision that must have lain in his mind. It reads:

Downing Street April 1. 1835 Sir I have the honor to acknowledge  the script of you letter of the 31st March.  I am not enabled to give any  other assurance in respect of the Bill introduced by Mr Poulter than that I shall give it due attention during its progress  through the House of Commons. I have the honor to be Sir Your obedient servant Robert Peel William Leaper Newton Esq

William Leaper Newton

William Newton and his family lived in the Leylands, a neo-classical mansion, then just outside Derby city centre, where the bank of Crompton,Newton and Co. was established in Irongate. William Leaper Newton was well established as a leading player in Derby society. In 1829 he had followed in his father’s footsteps and had been elected Mayor. In 1832 he was listed among the Officers of the Corporation, held the office of Magistrate and counted the local MPs and aristocracy among his circle. William Leaper Newton died in March 1851

This indenture was made on the 24th September, 1781, between Thomas William Coke, Esq, of Longford, Derby, and John Whiteley of Crompsall and refers to 26 acres of farming land in Lancashire and the payment of rent of £38.10.0. yearly.  The beneficiaries appear to be three children - Ann Bowker (8 years), Hannah Bowker (6 years) and John Bowker (4 years). the children of Charles Bowker. (I hazard a guess these are the heirs of Thomas Coke). This indenture is I think of vellum and is in a fragile condition.  The seal has damaged the document where it has been folded and there are some tears.

Civil War & Plague.- Washington (Robert, of Bank Hall, Chapel-en-le-Frifth, Derbyshire )  Autograph Letter signed to Lady Mary Moore,  1p. with address on a bifolium, folio, Bank Hall, 30th September 1647, playfully chiding her for not having written, and giving news of the war and the plague, “there are many of Excy. ffairfax troops amongst us to our greate charges being enforced to paie them about 15s p[er] week allowance ye plague continueth very full in Chester[field] and villages thereabout...”, folds, framed and glazed.

This letter shows that the prevailance of outbreaks of plague were common occurrences in seventeenth century England. The most famous was at the village of Eyam whose population quarantined itself in the mid-1660s, midway between Bank Hall in Chapel-en-leFrith and Chesterfield.
