The papers revolve around two Richard Pool(e)s, one of whom made his mark on a 1793 conveyance of land in Cowdray's Lane, Duffield (the papers imply he died around 1810), and another who died in Hullandward in 1872. An interesting though incomplete sequence of property deeds ranging in dates from 1897 to 1910.  Formerly Tanyard House, Tanyard Lane, the property appears to have been converted to a laundry by Henry Frederick Meyer in 1897.  It became known as the Repton Steam Laundry and the 1910 deed records the setting up of the New Repton & District Laundry 18 months previous.  In 1915 the company acquired the freehold rights to the property.  8 documents in all, 7 of them on parchment.  (ref 8/134)

Vellum document, approximately 16" x 8", dated the "thirtieth year of the reign of George the Second", which by my reckoning is 1757. This is a final judgement made in the King's Court at Westminster by Justices John Willes, Edward Clive and Henry Bathurst. It concerns property in the "Borough of Derby" sold by Isaac Hawkins to Edward Hunt. On the reverse of the document it states: "Delivered by Proclamation according to the form of the Statute". I assume this means that the text of the document was read out to the general public. The document is in good condition for its age, with only minor foxing and no holes or tears. The text is perfectly legible and much clearer than the photo suggests.

No mention is made of Sir John Coke, or his father of the same name (d. 1664) who were the owners of Melbourne from 1628. Sir John Coke left Melbourne in January 1643 and went to Tottenham to escape the ravages of the civil war. Sir Matthew Lister, physician. Offered in this auction is a genuine historical manuscript from the reign of King George III. It is a hand scrivened indenture dated September 4th 1815 between the Reverend William Hurd, Gent, of Kniveton in Derbyshire and Mr Thomas Travis of Crich in Derbyshire. It relates to various properties being leased by Hurd to Travis in the manor of South Wingfield in Derbyshire. The indenture measures 24 inches wide by 17 inches high and is in lovely condition for a hand-written document almost 200 years old. This is a highly collectable piece containing 39 lines of beautiful hand written text. The indenture is signed on the bottom by William Hurd and carries his seal in red sealing wax. The duty stamp is also intact. The document has been folded for much of its life, the crease marks of the folds are visable but having been folded has done much to preserve the quality of the document. Also mentions Samuel Hardwicke, possibly owning or occupying adjoining land.

8 pieces of paper with various notations regarding properties in Duffield and some other parts of Derbyshire.  These look as though they are probably rough notes made by a clerk and some are quite difficult to read.  e.g. "John Taylor senr. of Duffield.  Objection made to his Claim in Right of a House - in his own Possession", etc.  However, some contain lots of names and information - probably a "treasure" for anyone researching this area.  These documents are undated and cite documents of the 1700s.  One is headed "Settlement of Lands Upon My Sister, lands at Gaddesby".  These lands cost £1665 03s 6d

Two documents the first of which is 3 pages and dated 13th January 1677 which would appear to be a draft indenture.  Names mentioned John Burgh of Waterhouse, Staffs. (gent.), Phillip Trafford of Swithamley, Staffs. (gent) son and heir of William Trafford, Francis Hollingshead son and heir of Francis Hollingshead of Gawsway, Cheshire (gent) and Francis Challinor of The Knowles, Staffs. (gent).  It has a piece crossed out which mentions the marriage portion of John Burgh & Margaret his wife, daughter of William Trafford.  It mentions property in Fairfield, Derbyshire and Clownam, Derbyshire.  One the reverse it is headed "Articles betwixt Brough of Clownham and P. Trafford".  The second document is four pages long and may be connected with the first (although the handwriting is the same, the ink is a different colour).  It mentions the same people as the first and relates to "a bond of £500 penalty with Condicion...".  It quotes the will of John Burgh and mentions his heir Richard Burgh. Both documents have been folded, are a bit grubby and have some damage.
