This parchment indenture dates from 27 June 1720 and has been transcribed. It is a mortgage between John Ottiwell of Ellesmere and Thomas Owen of Bagley. The indenture names others, as well as quite a few places. There are a few marks in places - hardly surprising when the age of this item is considered, and they do not detract. The parchment itself is still quite flexible, and has some lovely caligraphy. There are 3 x 6p duty stamps, and it measures approx 20" x 24".

[Goodaker] Order to pay Penance in Church

This order was served on Mary Goodaker in 1769. During Sunday service Mary had to stand up on a chair and confess before the entire congregation of Eastham church that 'whereas I (good people) forgetting my Duty to Almighty God, did commit the detestable Sin of Fornication with William Edwards and thereby provoked the heavy Wrath of God against me........'. Mary had to remain on the chair for the rest of the service. One wonders if anything happened to William Edwards, who undoubtedly should have been there in Mary's place. Single paper sheet, printed form with manuscript details. The certificate that Mary actually perfomed her penance is blank, so this is the 'office' copy - however such orders are exceedingly scarce on the market. The paper is in two parts, having completely torn along a fold, but no text is affected. (ref 408/101)

[Hall documents] Legal Observations prior to Court Case

On offer here are 2 sets of legal observations on aspects of a court case - quite possibly a family dispute - resulting from the 1845 death of Thomas Hall. One analyses in detail his family background, his father being Philip Hall of Congleton - or Leek - or both - or perhaps Thomas' grandfather was another Philip. Manuscript on paper. (ref B140/729)

[Macclesfield] Abstract of title to premises in Sutton in Macclesfield

This 1868 abstract lists transactions dating back 30 years. Once known as Pykereye or Meadow, this eventually became 5 houses (73/75/77/79/81 Pitt Street) as detailed in an accompanying 1943 abstract. An accompanying plan shows that one WC was shared by no's 77, 79 and 81 which was next door to the Fox & Grapes. Useful piece of local history detailing the parties involved in the various property transactions. (ref B140/597)

This very large 3 page indenture is dated 1st March 1774 and concerns the transfer/purchase of a lot of ground on Barn Lane in Chester, UK from Mr Whittle and Mr Whalley to a Mr Dennil. It includes a detailed history of the plot (as far as I can make out) from 1963 onwards and a drawing of the land on the reverse of page 2. There are stamps to each page and 6 wax seals. This is the largest indenture I have seen with each page measuring 32" x 24" (just less than 3ft x 2ft) and the pages are joined along the bottom edge. The document has been folded - the first page with the wax seals is good and clean for age but the second and third pages show water damage and more serious wear to the folds
