Milles (Thomas). The Catologue of Honor ...,
printed by William Jaggard, 1610 eng. title by Renold Elstracke, costume
engs. and armorials (some hand-col.) to text, lacks A2 (as usual), engraving
of King James I in Parliament p.61 present, numerous contemp. marginal notes,
and sig. of Raphe Starkey, Ano.1613 to title, some staining to first and last
leaves, modern red buckram, cover detached along upper hinge, rubbed, thick
folio xxx Ralph Starkey, (d. 1628), archivist, son of John Starkey of Darley
Hall, Cheshire. On his father's death c.1613, Ralph is said to have been
defrauded of his estates by his younger brother, who destroyed his father's
will. Ralph became a merchant in London and collected and transcribed many
state papers and other manuscripts. He aquired important and confidential
papers, formerly belonging to William Davison, Queen Elizabeth's Secretary of
State. On 10 Aug. 1619 a warrent was issued authorising the search of
Starkey's house and the seizure of Davison's papers, amounting to forty-five
parcels. Starkey was also an author, as well as transcriber and collector.
This is a wide margined copy, STC 17926. (1) £300-400 |

Enormous
vellum indenture dated 1834, being the indenture for the sale of a huge
estate in the Stockport area of Cheshire, thirty-seven leaves of vellum
including an extensive number of schedules listing all the land involved,
names of tenants, size of each parcel of land etc. One of the largest single
vellum documents we have ever seen. The estate changed hands for the
staggering sum of more than œ68,000. This document will provide a
considerable amount of information about the tenants and landholders in an
important area to the south of Manchester. |

Collection
of manuscript documents, mid. 19th c., including a valuation of silk mills
and other property in Macclesfield and Hurdsfield dated 1871; an inventory
and valuation of the pictures and drawings at Tytherington House,
Macclesfield, dated 1859; an inventory of bonds held by John Brocklehurst of
Tytherinton House, Macclesfield, dated 1871; a manuscript estate plan of the
Tellow Fold Estate, dated 1871; a valuation with manuscript plan of a field
on Macclesfield Common dated 1857; an inventory and valuation of the timber
holdings of John Brocklehurst; documents relating to various property
transactions in Macclesfield; printed auction particulars for two properties
at Bollington and Poynton with a manuscript list of the biddings on each lot
with names of bidders etc; various letters, receipts, legal papers etc. An
extremely interesting group of documents charting the fortunes of
Macclesfield and surrounding areas at a time when the silk trade in the town
was at its height. The majority of the papers concern the recently deceased
John Brocklehurst of Tytherington House, who by the evidence of these papers
was fabulously wealthy. His stock holding in railway companies alone, for
example, totalled more than œ243,000, while his capital in his silk mills was
a further #100,000. The inventory of his pictures also provides a fascinating
insight into the tastes of a leading Victorian industrialist at the pinnacle
of his fortune. |
