original, authentic deed / indenture for CHarles NOrris to Henry Ford.  Norris's sons are mentioned in the document. Document references the "Fair Hill Estate."  Also references Dauphin Street, Fair Hill Street, . Indenture dated 1852.  1852 revenue stamp is attached (hard  stamp to locate as well).  Thick paper. Measures 24 x 18 inches.  Document found in box in Pennsylvania home. George Fox is mentioned and his sons in this document as well.

This document is quite historical for the city of Philadelphia. The Norris family is frequently mentioned in various historical books regarding PHiladelphia. In one part reads, "being part of hte same premises called Fair Hill, which Joseph Parker Norris, by his last Will, dated 15th June, 1838........... to Charles Fox and George Fox..............."  All very prominent Quakers. Mentioned in the Yearly Members of Friends / Philly Quakers Books. George Fox and William Penn were friends.

I believe the FAir Hill Estate is now the Fair Hill Buriel Grounds. I believe it was originally owned by Quakers --- which would be George Fox. I believe the George Fox received the land as a gift from William Penn. I believe the land is registered historic. I live not too far from Philly -- this is just from my own recollection -- please verify.

The condition of this fine document is very good. Some discoloring in crease areas.

1757 colonial INDENTURE LAND LEASE/DEED~ DUTTON/HUGH TRIMBLE chester pa. This is a very nice original 1810 indenture from New Jersey. It measures about 16" by 18" and is on handmade parchment. It appears to be a land mortgage agreement between John Westervelt of Morris County and Jacob Eckerson of Warrington in Bergen County for a parce of land. There are many notes and descriptions of the land, written with a steel pen. Unfirtynately, the age of the document has caused its folds to split down the middle.

This is an original indenture for a survey that relates to 24 acres of Rockbridge County, Virginia land that was taken to the post office and mailed.    The postal portion is also considered collectible because of the postal markings and the addressee.

1851 blue "STAUNTON Va." circular datestamp and a "Paid 5" rate (unpaid rate after July 1, 1851 was 5 cents versus 3 cents prepaid).  This is a very extensive land Indenture WITH a detailed survey and survey MAP involving the heirs of Benjamin Borden, a surveyor named John Withrow, George M. Cochran and Benjamin Crawford. Clerk of the Rockbridge court Samuel McD. Reid recorded this on pge 427 of Book B.B. in the Augusta Court records.

Involves 24 acres of land apparently first deeded in 1805.

From the images the indenture is dated 9 August 1859 and was from Samuel Clarke, Trustee of Borden's representatives, of the Town of Staunton in the state of Virginia on the one part and William Leesk of the County of Rockbridge in the state aforesaid of the other part. The indenture witnesses that Samuel Clarke was a Trustee of Joseph Broden's representatives in a case against John Bowyer in 1805. Samuel was now selling the land in question, in Rockbridge and adjoining the lands of Alexander Moores, to William Leesk.

Land indenture from the state of Maryland, Allegany County in the Skipton area. It is an agreement between Andrew Harry and Gabriel Jacob of Allegany County on June 13th, 1796.  It involves a parcel of land in Skipton (now Old Town) being sold by by Andrew Harry to Gabriel Jacob for 41 pounds, fourteen shilling and six pence.

This is on paper and is written front and back on what was a two page document.  The document measures appoximately 16 inches long by 13 inches tall.  One the front is the agreement and description of the land.  On back is an acknowledgement by the justices in Allegany. This is on the top half. On the bottom half is the Deed of Conveyance being entered into the record.   A interesting document.

This grant is in decent condition considering it is on paper and not vellum.  Pages are all still connected although along the folds there are rips, a couple of small holes only minimally impacting the text and it is fragile. Aging and browning to the paper and some nicks and chips along edges. More strange is the purple stain that shows up along all three of the documents folds.  It looks almost like wine stains.  It is a light purple and the text is still visible but it is a mystery as to what the substance is. Definitely old stains.

1815 Land Indenture Document - Woodruff-Stephens - Fayette Co. KY. 13.25 x 16" printed form with hand-inked entries.

This is legal land indenture agreement between two couples and another party signed in December of 1815. In brief, Ichebod and Mary Woodruff , and Ezra and Martha Woodruff are agreeing to buy land from one John Stephens and his wife, the land being two parcels "on the Waters of Elkhorn" onc containing 37 acres and the other containing 34 acres. The agreement is struck by exchange of one dollar, and there is a payment schedule, with amounts due at various times into 1816 totaling $1,025.50. A separate deed of conveyance is mentioned. There terms in case payment is not made, giving Mr. Stephens the right to sell the land to the land to the highest bidder with some other finer legal points.

The entire text is lengthy, and we are not including it all here - see the detail photo. The bottom of the document has the names and marks of all the respective Woodruffs. The back has a notation by the Clerk of court stating that the Woodruff wives were separately interviewed and that they both freely relinquished their dower rights. Another panel of the back has notations regarding the deed, the dower, and what appears to be a note that a recording fee was paid. - with a reference to the recording book page number.

All in all this is an interesting example of an early 1800s land agreement - involving in this case, what are probably two relatives (brothers or father and won) and their wives.

CONDITION: Fair to Good. The document was folded in 8ths and the horizontal fold has two 2" splits affecting a few words of the payment agreement, but the agreement can be deciphered. There is mild overall yellowing, and the edges are worn. Some of these documents were printed on duplicate forms and torn in half, but it is not clear whether this one was.

It is very heavy paper, almost like a canvas paper.

A very interesting 1798 indenture on vellum between Benjamin Chew, Alexander Wilcocks and Benjamin Chew the younger (son) to Michael Martin for a tract of land. Benjamin ches (1722-1810) had quite a distinguished career as a well known Philadelphia lawyer, Head of the Pennsylvania Judiciary System and Chief Justive of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. As a prominent Philadelphia personality, Chew knew just about everyone of importance before during and after the American Revolution including George Washington and the Penn family. (see below for more in depth information). This indenture is quite long with in depth details on the land and a long list of related names. William Pemnn is also mentioned. The bottom of the document has the signatures of Benjamin Chesw, his son and Alexander Wilcocks along with their red wax seals that have their portraits. This piece is also signed by Edward Shippen and John Chew. The document is in good condition with some sage darkening along some of the folds and a few light spots on the vellum, still very readable, the penmanship is quite good. Measures 33 1/2" x 24". An especially nice indenture and a great document from this famous Philadelphian.

Title: Elizabeth Coutty to Redmond Byrne

Date: 1797

Location: Philadelphia

Info:  Original deed / indenture between Elizabeth Coutty of the Northern Liberties to Redmond Byrne, merchant.  Research shows that he was a grocer.

This deed is for property that was located on King or Water Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets along the Delaware River, and was sold for 1000 pounds.  This property is now Penns Landing. Deed is notarized and signed by Thomas McKean as Doctor of Law and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. As a Governor of Pennsylvania and signer of the Declaration, his signature is rather rare and sought after.  A search for past sales have shown a range of $450 to $1250 for signed documents and up to $2800 for signed letters.

Colonial  American handwritten Land deed Agreement signed by early settlers of Philadelphia, PA; namely Anthony Morris, one of the earliest Mayors in Philadelphian history, as well as members of the Quaker line of Howell and Robinson.

DEED IS BOLDLY AND CLEARLY DATED, IN PHILADELPHIA, JULY 20, 1695!

17th Century early American document on full vellum, found in an upstate NY estate. This is an indenture for a Katherine Howell (b1667) pertaining to land inheritance in Philadelphia. Katherine Howell married James Robinson in 1691, who is mentioned in the piece. Document mentions various owners of land in Philadelphia (I can see Thomas Sysam, John Day, and Thomas Langston), and is signed by Katherine with her seal at bottom. It is also signed on the back by several people: John Paine, Thomas Carpenter, Miriam Johnson, and  bold and extravagant signature of John B Earns. There also also two signatures in the center of the rear side, a Richard Redman, and, most importantly, Anthony Morris, one of the first mayors of Philadelphia. A bit of edgewear, as shown, with a bit of loss at the folds and corners, but nothing major,  but for its age in great shape with legible & beautiful early American handwriting, highlighted by amazing early Philadelphian signatures. Verso also handwritten as shown. Measures, when opened,  23" x 20".

Anthony Morris (I)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony Morris, Jr. (23 August 1654, Stepney, London, England – 24 October 1721, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was a brewer, Quaker preacher, judge, and mayor of Philadelphia.
Early life and education

Morris emigrated to Burlington, New Jersey, in 1682, and relocated to Philadelphia three years later. In 1687, he built the original Morris Brewery, establishing a family business that would last until the 1830s. As the Francis Perot (and Sons) Malting Company, it endured into the 1960s as arguably the oldest continuous business in the United States. The original brewery was located on Front Street, south of Walnut. In 1745, Morris's grandson Anthony IV (son of the second Anthony Morris in Philadelphia) built a larger brewery at the corner of Dock and Pear (now Thomas Paine Place). At this location, Anthony IV's grandson, Benjamin Wistar Morris, brewed the preferred porter-style beer for President George Washington during the early 1790s.

In addition to serving Philadelphia as one of its leading brewers, Anthony Morris served in a variety of judicial capacities during the 1690s and was described by William Penn as "one of the most sufficient as well as diligent magistrates" in the colony. In 1704, Morris became the city's mayor, a post later occupied by his son Anthony III, as well. Most of the older Anthony's attention after the turn of the 18th century, however, was devoted to preaching among the Society of Friends throughout North America.
