Three mid-nineteenth century scrapbooks. Once the property of J W Marriott of Taunton, Somerset, and dating from the early 1860s. There are connections with Bristol and Somerset. All contain hand-written poems, prose pieces and jottings in a splendid copperplate style of calligraphy. Much of the hand-written content is not original. There are also several press cuttings, mainly from west country newspapers on subjects ranging from news items to humourous incidents and riddles. There are also some small watercolours and pen and ink drawings usually of a high standard, unsigned but likely to be by Marriott. The 3 scrapbooks are: one size 20 by 16 cm, with written contents as above and two amateur watercolours loosely inserted which Marriott painted as a child, several later pen and ink sketches and a poor front cover; another 23 by 19 cm, containing the better quality watercolours and sketches plus a photograph of a house; the third book also measures 23 by 19 cm, its contents are almost entirely hand-written but with no pictures and some damp damage. The second of the three contains a charming original poem on the Clifton suspension bridge and is dated September 1864, and this is signed by AW, probably a relative. Each of the books is almost full. Overall most of the contents are in Good condition, but the boards are worn.
