A
handwritten manuscript log of Adam Hamilton Aboard the Ship Urania, Between Jun 1839 – July 1839.
A lovely example of a seaman’s log, maintained by Adam Hamilton, serving
aboard the 500 tonne ship Urania,
between June 1838 and July 1838. We learn from the log that the ship was led
by Captain Noakes, and that it departed Liverpool
dock on 13 June 1839. Adam Hamilton
was born in Moffat Dumfries on 9 July 1822, the son of John Hamilton and
Janet (Kinghorn), so was just sixteen at the start
of the voyage. The ship sailed around
the Cape of Good hope, to India and Persia.
Also included with the log are two letters, one of which was written
on 18 July 1837, in George town, Demerara, which I
believe is in Guyana. This 3 page letter was written to a Mr
William Wilson, back in Moffat. From
other research that I have conducted I have found that Adam Hamilton, married Agnes Wilson, neice
of William Wilson, at Sanquhar, Dumfires
in 1850. Agnes herself was the
daughter of James Wilson (who is mentioned in the letter) and Isabell (Halliday). The other letter included in this lot is
dated March 23 1839, from Adam to his father in Moffat, and is postmarked
from Liverpool. I
will give a few brief quotes from the log. “Having
engaged with Messrs Forrester & co to go abroad to any place in the world
that they or their agents might choose to decide, in the place I paid a visit
to Moffat, my mother village. Saw and parted with all my friends in tolerable
spirits…. having returned to Liverpool, the port which we’re destined to
sail. I busied myself in making
preparations for the voyage – no easy task when we know not in what climate
we are doomed to exist “Our
day of sailing came – 13th June 1839 at 12 O clock, leaving behind many a
waiting friend principally belonging to the squad of boilermakers “Had
a great many cape pigeons accompanying us today. They seem very fond of pieces of pork, or
any kind of slush thrown overboard. “The
captain threw some cards overboard belonging to one of the boilermakers, and
so kicked up a murderous row amongst them.
He had no right and promises to pay for them, but he added on no
account would he allow cards to be played aboard. He’s a silly man I think. “This
is a temperance ship, but the captain considering that of late the crew has had
a very wet cursing job…he is considering the propriety of giving the men a
glass of wine. What a beeficient and indulgent captain!!! “Caught
a shark last night, length 7 ½ ft. “The
Island of Calpenny was visible from the mast head
this afternoon. It seems a very low
flat island covered with cocoa nut trees.
I believe it is not inhabited but it is a fishing bay used by some of
the natives of Malibar. “We
now approach the town of Goa, now the only Portugese
settlement on the continent of India.
How are the mighty fallen and the lofty
brought down. “We
now have Colonel Hughes on board of the 13th. He has 5 native servants with
him. One he’s teaching can speak two
of their languages and is now learning English. “The
Persian Gulf gets the name of being infected with hordes of piracy.” |

manuscript document pertaining to the June 29, 1716 trial of James Cornwall for
Treason for taking part in the Jacobite Rebellion
of 1715. The document presents the case and the fact that although Cornwall
was incapable of bearing arms, he was in the locale
of the rebellion. The court found hime guilty but gave Mr. Cornwall the opportunity to
bring forth affidavits from persons who would attest he did not participate
in the rebellion. The document has two affidavits, from a James Drummond and
John Turring who state he was in the area to
conduct business with an Andrew Smith who owned a Mill at Garrell
near Kilsyth in the Shire of Sterling in North
Britain. Nicely penned, mounted to leaf. Measures 8 x 13". On the verso
is attached a portion of an interesting plea to the King to allow those held
in the rebellion who were evidently not involved in the plotting to go free
to return to their families on account of financial hardship and an
insinuation that the King could alternatively have them deported from the
Kingdom. Measures 8 x 6.25". |

Lovely
bundle of old documents relating to the Lane family of Co. Cork, Ireland.
First is a handwritten letter by Daniel Lane in 1803. This is addressed to
his children, explaining his will. His children are named as Samuel, John, Francis,
Jane and Catherine. Second document is the very lengthy will made by Daniel
Lane of the Finn Barrs, City of Cork, merchant.
Mentions children and also Sarah Sandiford his
sister, son James Lane, childrens grandfather
Francis Beck. Seems to be dated 1819 and 1820. Several pages in length -
needs close reading and some research but lots of family information. Compete
with signatures and seal - in fairly fragile condition with splits along
folds. Next document is an indenture dated 1869 between William Lane Jnr. and
Eliza Gray Landale of Melville Place, Portabello near Edinburgh Scotland. Another very lengthy
document (several pages) - also refers to Oliver and Rebecca Dowlin of Charleville in the
County of Cork and James Landale of Liverpool.
Lastly is a long, hand-written will by Samuel Lane of St Finn Barr's in the
County of Cork. Unable to see date and this is in fragile condition. Mentions
lots of family members including children Samuel, John, Frank and sisters
Elizabeth and Eliza Lane. Also requests a trust for "the use of
twenty-five poor Protestant residents in the Parish of St Finn Barr's to be
expended in the purchase of Bread and distributed to them in St Barr's Church
near the Chancel after the second service...." |

This
document was handwritten in the year 1767……It is 238 years old The deed is an
Instrument of Sasine (an archaic Scottish land
deed) and is written on vellum rather than paper and involves the sale of a house in the
Scottish Borders to a Mr. John Davidson.
The handwriting is very good and is fairly easy to read. The language is English and apart from the use
of legal terms is quite understandable.
It is witnessed by Richard Turnbull and by James Renton (a Notary
Public). At the foot of the page Mr.
Renton has inserted a paragraph in Latin in his own handwriting. On the left hand side of the deed a stamp
duty mark has been embossed on a little square wafer which has been attached. It shows that duty of two shillings and
three pennies have been paid. Further
down there is a stamp mark with a crown showing that a tax of 5 pennies has
also been paid. Immediately below that
the Notary Mr. Renton has marked the device of his office this cosists of his motto in Latin and immediately underneath
his initials "JR" and NP (Notary Public) Condition - Vellum tends
to wear a lot better than paper so the document is in very good
condition. There are no rips or tears
and no discernable damage. It has been
kept folded (as is normal for Scottish deeds) and consequently the ink has
not faded. It measures 49cm by 37
approx. |

of over 75 manuscript documents, many quite lengthy, regarding lands in Banton in Kilsyth and the
Cornwall family. The earliest is dated 1694 and is lengthy real estate
conveyance, with most centered 1700 through 1720. A few later and a few
possible earlier (one appears to be dated 1660's regarding Lord Balmorino) The archive is worthy of research and most of
these documents are nice in length and content. All in Scots English. John
Cornwall, named in many of the documents, was held in the Jacobite
rebellion for his participation, but was later pardoned. He spent time in
Newcastle prison. I do not believe there are any direct content documents but
did fine one item referringto
compensation to Cornwall for his time in prison in 1716. All mounted

This
is a chance to purchase a very interesting and attractive piece of Scottish
history. The lot consists of a title
deed for property in the Scottish Borders' village of Duns (spelt Dunse in the document) and is close to 200 years old. It
is handwritten mostly in legal English (but has a section in a different hand
which is in Latin). It is described as
an Instrument of sasine in favour of George Darling's Trustees. It was signed at Lauder in 1812. It is wriiten on
a very large sheet of vellum or parchment which has then been folded to
create two sheets each with two sides (ie. 4 pages)On the left hand edge of page 2 there is a strip of
stamping paper which would have been glued to the document by a lawyer. On the strip there are two embossed stamps each for seven
shillings. This was a duty imposed by
the crown on property transactions.
There is also an ink stamp topped by a crown for "paper" tax
of four shillings and eight pence. The deed which is on vellum or parchment , is in remarkably good condition for it's age
(see photo) and is perfectly legible and readable. each page measures
approximately 22 inches (55.5cm) by 13 3/4 inches (35cm). |

1786 ”Disposition Assignation and
Translation” and involves the sale of property by a Joseph Maither late resident of Preston to a William Cockburn a
“Wright” residing in Dunse (now Duns in the
Scottish Borders). It consists of a
single large sheet of thick paper which measures approximately 16 ¾ inches
(42.5cm) by 13 ½ (34cm) and which has been folded in two (like a newspaper)
to create 4 pages. The document has
been drafted in clear handwriting and in legal English. It has been kept folded (as is normal for
old Scottish property deeds) and so the ink has not faded and the
whole document is readable. The text
runs to 3 of the 4 pages,
the 4th being used as the cover sheet. At the top left hand
corner of the first page there is an embossed stamp in respect of payment of duty
which would have been charged by the crown on the sale of the property. It shows that duty of one shilling and six
pence was paid. (can just be made out in photo 2,
easier to see in real life.) A couple of inches lower down there is an ink stamp for a half penny (photo 2). This is a paper tax which was levied on the
paper used to create the document. The property actually being sold is
located in Dunse and is a house and yard (they
might even still be there). The
witnesses include a licensed auctioneer and an innkeeper. Condition: The deed is 219 years old so has some wear.
It has a small tear which runs for about 2 inches along one of it’s folds. It also
has a small ragged hole (about one quarter of an inch in diameter) which may
have been made a couple of centuries ago by a hungry bookworm. |

indenture, produced in 1805 is a covenant to produce indentures by George Chalmer of Ayrshire for the
inspection of George Cox of Milton Clevedon in
order to prove titles. The indenture commences by referring to an earlier
indenture between Henry Taylor and George Chalmer
recording the lease and release to Chalmer of land
and buildings in the Manor or Lordship of Westcombe,
formerly the estate of a Thomas Whitehead and Richard Ramsay. All the
indentures required for possible production are listed in a convenient
schedule that lists eleven indentures extending back to 1670. There is a
summary of each which not only provides dates but also the names of the
parties involved. This indenture extends to three sheets and includes a wax
seal and the signature of Chalmer. It is in very
good condition. |

This
is a unique object it is also very rare having been handwritten in Latin in 1701……
304 years ago. It is an archaic Scottish property deed described as a “Precept of Clareconstat by Mr. Wm. Hay of Drumolzier
in favour of Thos. Anderson”. It is dated 9th May 1701 and is written on a single
sheet of parchment. Although it is more than 300 years old it is in
remarkable condition. This is due in
part to the fact that it is written on parchment which is much more durable
than paper. It has also been kept folded,
which reduces fading of the ink because it limits the effects of light. It measures 18 3/4 inches (48cm) by 8 3/4
inches (22cm) approx. |

This
document involves the transfer of property by David and William Grieves to
David Owens in 1731 so is 274 years old.
It was drafted at a time when America was still a British colony and
we still had to wait another 30 for the industrial revolution to start. Apart
from the historical context this document is particularly interesting the
disposal of the land is taking place under the supervision of the Sheriffdom of Berwick.
The deed was signed in Greenlaw (spelled Grinlaw in the deed) in the presence of the Sheriff
Depute. It runs to just over three
pages and is written on what is described as "stampt
(stamped) paper". It is a single
sheet measuring 15 inches (39cm) by 12 inches (31cm) approximately, which has
been folded over to make 4 pages. The
writing is clear and readable with little fading of the ink. The document is in remarkable condition for
its age with a little bit of book worm damge (see
photo) and one or two splits on fold lines.

The
lot consists of a title deed for property in the Scottish Borders' village of
Duns (spelt Dunse in the document) and is close to
200 years old. The handwriting is very
good and very clear and it is described as an Disposition by
William Cockburn (with the special advice and consent of his father) in favour of
George Darling and his wife Janet Forsythe.
It was signed on "stamped paper" at Dunse
on First November 1806. It is wriiten on a very large sheet of thick paper which has
then been folded to create two sheets each with two sides (ie. 4 pages)On the left hand edge of page 1 there are two embossed stamps one for ten shillings, the other for one
shilling and six pence. This was a
duty imposed by the crown on property transactions. There is also an ink stamp topped by a
crown for "paper" tax of two pence. The deed is in remarkably good condition with no
damage (see photo) and is perfectly legible and readable being written in
legal English rather than Scots or Latin.
Each page measures approximately 10 inches (25cm) by 13 1/2 inches
(39cm). |

onwards. This is a stunning example of an early scrapbook/keepsake album. It contains
some of the finest pencil sketches I have ever come across. I believe that
the album belonged to members of the same family and was passed down from one
to another. It appears to have firstly belonged to a
JANET RIDPATH, then passed to a WILLIAM ALEXANDER RIDPATH and then finally
passed to an ALICE MARGARET RIDPATH. It is full of a variety of different
pieces such as ,excellent pencil drawings, ink
and watercolour sketches,poetry,
and well written entries. Many are signed and dated.
Throughout the album there seems to be a connection with mariners, ships and also Edinburgh. Below are just a few
examples from this exceptional album. A

It
is an ancient Scottish
property deed handwritten in 1726 and was signed on the 14th
April that year. It is written on a
single large sheet of parchment or velum and is in Latin. It is described on it’s
cover as a Charter of Resignation by Alexander Hay (on behalf of his father),
in favour of David Grieve. It relates to property in the Scottish
Borders village of Duns (spelled Dunse in the
document). It is in very good condition as can be seen in the photo. It has no rips or tears has not been
effected by fungus
and the ink has little sign of fading and the document is still clearly readable. It has marks commensurate with it’s age but it is still clear. On the left hand side a wafer has been
attached and over this an embossed seal has been pressed. This shows that the sum of two shillings
and three pence was paid by way of stamp duty on the deed. Further down there is an ink “paper tax”
stamp showing that five and a half pence was paid by way of tax on the sheet
of parchment/vellum. |

very old Scottish land deed dated
1802. It relates to property in the
Scottish Borders, probably in the village of Duns. It is a Disposition (sale of property) by
William Cockburn to a
janet Forsythe and is written on
taxed paper in fairly understandable
legal English. The writing is clear
and readable (not always the case with old documents). The document is written on a single large
sheet of paper which has been folded in half, creating four pages. The text covers all four pages. Page one contains several stamps and
embossed seals relating to revenue. On
the top left hand corner there are two embossed seals. One relates to "Comp Duty" and is
for Fourteen Shillings. Next to it is
another "Single Shilling Deeds" tax. Below them there is a stamped crown tax
mark for two shillings. This is a tax
levied by the crown for paper. Opened
out the deed measures 41 cm by 33 cmand is in very
good condition for it's age with no damage, rips,
