Oxford Bankrupt. Manuscript document on paper, 3pp large legal folio, dated May 30th 1797, dealing with the disposal of the estate of a bankrupt Cordwainer called Joseph Wickens of the Parish of St Martin's in Oxford, written in a legible chancery hand, some dusting to outer blank surface and one minor tear but otherwise in good overall condition. An unusually early bankruptcy document. The feckless Wickens had tried to carry on business as a cordwainer - or leather boot and shoe maker - for two years but fell into considerable debt. The document details the setting up a committee of creditors and the sale by public auction of his effects.

Interesting group of approximately twelve documents on paper and vellum, 17th-19th c., relating to property transactions in the Clanfield area of Oxfordshire, including an indenture of 1673, two early 18th c. obligation bonds (one water damaged but legible), one signed by the 'attorney to Mr Samuel Churchill' and other documents relating to the same area. One of the obligation bonds involves the then huge sums of money of œ2,200, while the other is in the name of James Stevens, steward to the Duke of Marlborough. Clanfield lies between Farringdon and Witney.

Scarce vellum indenture dated November 1st, 1650, relating to the sale of the Manor, mansion house, lands and woods of 'Lugershall' (modern day Ludgershall) on the Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire border, by William Child and his wife Elizabeth, written in a legible chancery hand, a little fading affecting a few words, and a little overall browning, but otherwise in good condition with attractive calligraphic initial letter enclosing the date. We have no records of a comparable document appearing on the market in recent years. This document contains one key insertion identifying the parties as Royalists as it refers to the payment of a sum of money for the discharging of a fine composition to Parliament for Child's 'delinquency to the Parliament or Commonwealth'. This was the term used by Parliament for Royalist estates that were generally forfeited until their owners paid a fine to the Committee for Compounding. Upon payment, the lands were usually returned. Those who refused or who were not permitted to compound had their estates remitted to the Treason Trustees. These records have largely disappeared, doubtless during the period shortly after the Restoration when Charles II reversed the process and seized estates from prominent Parliamentarians. The William Child referred to in this document could possibly be the organist and composer William Child (1606-97), organist at St George's Chapel, Windsor who was expelled from this position during the interregnum and rose to be musician to the Chapel Royal at the Restoration.

Attractive and historic document on vellum, dated 1789, being a private agreement to enclose part of the waste or common called Chambers Green in the parish of Caversham under Act of Parliament [29GII] for the purpose of planting and preserving trees for timber and underwoods and for more effectually preventing the destruction of trees, written in a neat legible hand on a single large leave of vellum with the signatures or marks and affixed wax red seals of 39 men and women having an interest in the waste or common, including Charles Sloane, 1st Earl Cadogan, and Charles Marsack of Caversham Park, in fine fresh condition. The reason for the Act of Parliament was to provide sufficient timber for building naval vessels at a period when England was almost permanently involved in Continental and American Wars - and of course a measure which was to prove vital for the defence of the Realm on the rise of Napoleon a decade later.
