London
and Newcastle FIVE LETTERS From George Gilroy at Bow to his father John
Gilroy of Newcastle (millwright), dated London, 29
March 1841 - 28 July, 1843. Each letter approx. two pages, in a neat hand,
with integral address panel on conjoint leaf, with postmarks and wax seals.
1841-3. £90.00 ¶ He complains of the difficult conditions 'trade is very
slack here now & has been out for 3,4 & 6
months..... I drew my money out of the Savings Bank thinking these rumours of
wars would depress the funds.... would you advise me to speculate in a
railway share for I have got about œ85 and I should like to make it work as
well as me....' Later letters mention his buying a Great North of England
Railway share for œ13.00, enquiring whether the 'Edinburgh Railway is to come
by the East coast or West....'. In August 1841 he
joins a drawing school '2 guineas a quarter', but in May 1842 is still out of
work 'I have had only 5 days work in the last 15 weeks and no prospect of
anything doing....' Later he considers going to India as an engineer in the
East India Co., quoting the rates of pay, etc.... 'I find the Sierra Lione
man has 3 guineas per week... so you see father I have asked less than the 3d
class engineers.... my friend advises me as trade is so dull to take a little
less....' |

this is a really lovely old English family bible, dating from
at least 1846 (that is the first registered name on the Family Register page
although it could well be older). (NB this belonged to the Fairless family
from Northumberland) It is big, measuring 12.5" long, 10" wide and
3.5" thick!) It is leather-bound, although there are some scratches and
scuffs to the leather and some wear to the spine. However, these should
easily polish out. The gold ornament and lettering on the spine is slightly
worn, but commensurate with its age! Inside, it is practically perfect, with
some lovely plates and maps. |

A COPY
OF THE VICAR'S CLAIM UPON ALNHAM COMMON TO THE GENTLEMEN COMMISSIONERS
APPOINTED BY AN ACT OF PARLIAMENT FOR DIVIDING AND INCLOSING ALNHAM COMMON,
NORTHUMBERLAND. Dated 4 August 1775 The document claims a right to the common
on moor for the vicarage house which is an old tower and another house -
Church House, Church Yard and certain parcels of glebe land belonging to the
parish church of Alnham in the occupation of Edward Potts, Thomas Dixon and
John Brown. A very interesting document from the time of the inclosure awards
for this parish. "ALNHAM, a parish in the northern division of the ward
of Coquetdale, in the county of Northumberland, 7 miles to the N.W. of
Rothbury. Alnwick is the post town. It comprises the townships of Alnham,
Prendwick, Screnwood, and Unthank. The river Alne, which flows by Alnwick and
falls into the North Sea at Alnmouth, rises near this village. The living is
a vicarage* in the diocese of Durham, value £200, in the patronage of the
Duke of Northumberland. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, was built in
1310. The old vicarage is also an interesting structure, having been built in
the reign of Edward III. It fell into ruins in 1643, but was restored by the
Duke of Northumberland in 1844. The upper part of the old fabric, called the
Peel Tower, is strongly supported with square embattled stonework. In 1850,
during some excavations, an ancient road, six feet wide, was discovered two
feet below the surface. Near the village, on the moors to the west, are
remains of an encampment in the form of a semicircle, with a double rampart
and trench, enclosing a space measuring 100 yards in diameter."

Includes recipes from the 'Dietic Reformer and Vegetarian Messenger' for

meat suggesting Grabham was vegetarian. Loose from the notebook is a

[Newcastle] Two Old Deeds relating to Property situated
in Heaton Park Road & Holly Avenue, Newcastle upon Tyne So says
the solicitor's pouch which contains these deeds (though in fact there are 3
not 2) - an 1879 further charge, and conveyances dated 1885 and 1898. The description doesn't do justice to the
scale of property involved - the 1898 conveyance was of more than 50 houses
in Jesmond, well over 100 in Heaton, as well as other houses in West Jesmond
and West Heaton and land at Byker Bank and Byker. This deed is accompanied by 2 large
multifolding parchment sheets which between them bear 5 site plans
identifying the properties being sold for an astonishing £80,000. Quite grubby but a lot of 19th century
local history to be discovered here.

.He shall not commit fornication nor contract matrimony within the said
term.He shall not play cards or dice tables. He shall not haunt taverns or
playhouses. Wages were from 3 shillings a week rising to 8 shillings after 7

RARE
VELLUM DEED OF SEPARATION BETWEEN HUSBAND & WIFE 1878 These unusual four
vellum documents are a Deed of Separation and Indenture dated 1878. Legal
separation between a husband and wife in the 19th Century was unusual, but
not unheard of. However, such things tend to get quietly buried in family
histories, and later generations are often unaware of their existence.
Consequently it is rare for an actual document of legal separation to be
offered for sale. Front of the Deed reads: DEED of
SEPARATION between Mr
William Pearson and Betsey his wife Dated
30th March 1878 Mr
William Pearson } to }
Deed of Covenant Mr
Charles Harvey & anor } There
is a later addition underneath for the appointment of a new Trustee, dated
25th February 1899 Extract
from the deed: "....said
Mr William Pearson will not at any time hereafter
require or by any means whatsoever compel to cohabit or live with him, or
institute any legal proceedings or take any other steps whatsoever for that
purpose, and will not in anywise molest or interfere with the said Betsey
Pearson in her manner of living or otherwise...." The
deed seems to separate their finances, and appoints Charles Harvey and one
other Trustee to oversee this. William
Pearson seems to be liable for all of the legal costs of the separation .... one of the
conditions of which seems to be that she does not reside within 100 miles of
Newcastle Upon Tyne. The
document speaks of "....unhappy differences,
and they have consequently agreed to live separate from each other..." There
seems to be property involved, and as far as I can make out, in amongst the
'herewiths' and 'aforesaids' Betsey was to "....receive and take an
annuity or clear yearly rent charge of £50...." The
document details the property concerned, which was in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The document is signed and sealed at the bottom by William Pearson, Betsey
Pearson, Charles Harvey and John Pearson In 1899 with the appointment of a
new trustee, it was signed and sealed by Richard Harvey and Charles Harvey
and witnessed by a Boston, Lincolnshire solicitor. The deed has a ten
shilling embossed stamp and a crown rubber stamp for Newcastle Upon Tyne 22.2.78
On the back of the deed there is some quite indistinct writing in ink, dated
1880. William Pearson is by then deceased, and his affairs have passed
through the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice |

APPRENTICESHIP INDENTURE SWAN, HUNTER AND WIGHAM RICHARDSON LIMITED
(SHIPBUILDERS & ENGINEERS) There
are three parts to the offer (click on small photos for larger images): (1) An
Apprentice Indenture, dated 12th April 1927, from
the shipbuilders Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson Limited of Wallsend and
Newcastle-on-Tyne. The agreement was fulfilled on the 31st March 1932, the
apprentice being a Wilfred Pringle English of 7 Wilberforce Street, Wallsend,
Northumberland. The
Indenture is fully completed with two Directors signatures and that of the
company secretary, plus those of Wilfred English and his father F.W. English
- their signatures are witnessed by the Neptune Works Chief Timekeeper and a
Shipwright. Wilfred
English’s pay is shown as 8/- per week for the first year with annual
increments to 9/-, 10/-, 12/- and 14/-. He could also qualify for a ‘War
Bonus’. The
Indenture has been kept folded, in four parts, in an envelope since that
date. There are marks on one edge where the document has been handled from
time to time. To me, though, it appears as I would expect to find an 80 year
old document. (2) To
go with the Indenture is a letter, dated 4th April 1932, that was sent with
the Indentures on completion of the agreed period (i.e. 22nd March 1927 to
30th March 1932. This has a Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Limited
heading. The page has been folded in half. (3)
There is also the brown envelope that enclosed the letter and the Indentures
on completion of the apprenticeship, postmarked 4 April 32 and with a 1½p
George V postage stamp. It’s getting slightly tatty now - but the Postmark,
address, and Swan, Hunter details can clearly be seen. |
