Historically important indenture on vellum, dated 1717, being
the marriage settlement of Edward Jeffery of Maidford,
Northants and Ann Are of Weedon Beck, written in a
flowing secretarial hand, with attached terrier on paper listing a
considerable number of pieces of land which were subject to the settlement,
both documents in fine condition. Rare. The terrier provides a wealth of
description including personal and field and strip names. This is a late
document to record such arrangements as the Enclosure Acts were being
steadily introduced across the countryside. |

. [?Barlee (William, rector of Brockhall, Northants)] Commonplace book, manuscript in
two hands, 291pp. excluding blanks, 1f. loose, water-stained, slightly
browned, original vellum, wormholes in lower cover, creased, yellowed and
stained, a few edges frayed, sm. 8vo, 14th August 1643 - 20th December 1684.
*** An intriguing volume with a possible connection between William Barlee, rector of Brockhall and
Thomas Pierce (1622-91) through Lady Spencer of Althorp.
Lady Dorothy Spencer, Countess of Sunderland (1617-84) was immortalised by
Edmund Waller in his courtship poems as 'Sacharissa'
"and by his verses secured for her a renown which she would not
otherwise have enjoyed. The name of Sacharissa,
which he bestowed upon her, was formed, 'as he used to say pleasantly,' from sacharum - sugar." - DNB. Barlee and
Pierce disagreed over calvanism in the Church of
England and wrote several pamphlets refuting each others
views. Pierce was appointed the young Lord Robert's tutor in 1652 and as Barlee lived only a few miles away they must have met.
Includes sermons, religious notes, payments for books and "Paid towards
ye trained bands since Nov 7th 1660", and tithes received from Lady
Spencer and her son Lord Robert etc. The payments listed include numerous references
for money paid to the Parliamentary army and the "country militia"
such as 10 shillings "To Sr Tho: Fairfax his Army" on June 4th 1649 and a
further 6 shillings 8 pence on 5th July. Also a payment to "Cromwell's
Army" of 14 shillings and 3 pence in 1650. Robert Spencer, second Earl of Sunderland (1640-1702), "he
has generally been considered, and probably with justice, as the craftiest,
most rapacious, and most unscrupulous of all the politicians of his
age." - DNB. |

faultless apart from a very small dark stain on the back sheet which does not
spoil the document. The document has been well preserved and is an ideal
piece of English history for collectors of old hand written documents. The
signature on the mortgage deed itself is a little faint and the original seal
which is in near perfect condition is for some reason a very dark
green/nearly black substance. The deed stamps in 1882 value £7.10.0. appear
as though they were impressed only today. The seals on the Transfer are again
near perfect. They are red. The Revenue stamps in 1891 value £1.10.0. are

Percival. There is a two shillings stamp representing the stamp duty which
was payable. There is a small wax seal, but it is a more modern variety and
not the proper more traditional kind. The document has red ink on the front

mostly parchment documents ranging in dates from 1794 to 1870. Predominantly
to do with the Waters family, approx half are copyhold documents. An 1865
mortgage mentions a farmhouse 'formerly in the occupation of Thomas Gibbard but now converted into and used as five cottages
or tenements and in the several occupations of...'. Earlier documents mention
'The Home Close or Towns End Close'. Without local knowledge it is impossible
to say whether all the documents relate to one property but the investigation
would make a good local history assignment. The group (ref 277/7) |
