"Deck of Cards". The scrap
album of Private Richard Sharp, E Company, 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment
1884, containing a large quantity of possibly original verse, observations,
essays etc., mainly concerning his time serving in India, and including
possibly the original version of what became to be known as the song 'Deck of
Cards' - one of the most popular of all Country and Western Songs, blue cloth
boards, spine defective, but interior contents in fine condition. An
extraordinary discovery, which may finally settle the mystery of the lyrics
of a Country and Western classic which has been an international hit for more
than 50 years. In this volume, Sharp recounts an anecdote (which he signs as
having been composed by himself ) involving a fellow Private in the Regiment,
Richard Middleton, who attended church service and was caught playing with a deck
of cards. His explanation for his action is that individual cards remind him
of religious themes - the Ace being the One True God, the three (or Tray as
he calls it) reminds him of the Holy Trinity and so forth. He also observes
that the cards provide him with a kind of almanack. The extraordinary feature
of this manuscript is that it predates the accepted composition of the song
by 70 years - the generally accepted 'composer' being the country and western
star T Texas Tyler who had an American number one hit in 1948. It is
generally accepted that the event, which is believed to have really taken
place, was in WWII during the North African Campaign. The song was most
famously reissued by Wink Martindale at various times from the 1950's - each
time reaching number one, the perverse sentimentality of the lyrics touching
a note of accord with the public. However the present manuscript clearly
shows that the story had nothing to do with American soldiers, nor WWII, and
was in fact an incident involving a British Soldier in India at the height of
the Raj. |

Naval Fraud. Vellum manuscript document, dated 28 June
1786, referring to an agreement made on behalf of the King, by His Majesty's
Commissioners for victualing the Navy with a William Greenwood (now held in
Marshalsea prison) who agreed to the purchase of all the bran that should be
made at His Majesty's Bakehouse at Deptford and also all the bran from His
Majesty's Mills at Rotherhithe. Fraud and corruption of naval supplies was
rife at this time, and this scarce document details the vast quantities that
Greenwood had taken, amounts agreed for the payment of the Bran, etc., in his

Mariner's apprentice indenture. Scarce
printed paper indenture with manuscript insertions, dated March 19th 1811,
binding James Barley as an apprentice to Thomas Holt, Master Mariner, with
details of the draconian terms, including a ban on gambling, visiting ale
houses and detailing payments of forty pounds to be made over a three year
period, some weakness in the folds, probably caused by the fact that the
apprentice had to have the document about his person at all times while on board
ship, with contemporary endorsements of his three payments to verso, wood cut
engraving of a sailing ship to the top left hand corner of document,
signature of Holt and mark of Barley to the lower right hand corner. Scarce.
Documents of this nature rarely if ever appear on the market. A particularly
interesting aspect of this document is that the section referring to parental
consent has been crossed out, indicating that James was either an orphan or
from the poor house. |

WWI Victory Medal Named EAST SURREY REGIMENT. The British Victory medal 1st
saw light as the Inter-Allied Victory Medal, and was agreed to by all allies in
March 1919. All medals were to be almost identical to obviate the need to
exchange allied medals and each was patterned after a French medal of 1870.
The medal was authorized in Britain on 1 September 1919. The medal was
awarded to all ranks of the fighting forces, to civilians under contract, and
others employed with military hospitals who actually served on the
establishment of a unit in a theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11
November 1918 (inclusive). It was also awarded to members of the British
Naval mission to Russia 1919 - 1920 and for mine clearance in the North Sea
between 11 November 1918 and 30 November 1919. This medal was never issued
alone and was always issued with the British War Medal. A multiple-leaved
emblem is worn on this medal when it was awarded for WWI for those
"Mentioned-in-Despatches." This Victory Medal was awards to a
memeber of The EAST SURREY REGIMENT. Name/ F.C. Gray, Rank/ PTE, Number /

Naval Journal - ROBINSON (John H.) Midshipman's
Journal Book [Log] of Voyages of HMSs Cressy , Formidable , Plover , and Nile
, 1861-4. 4to. Well maintained journal-book of four periods of service on
board British Naval Vessels. Eight track-charts, one of them folding, one
double-page. Each section has a separate hand-drawn title page, that of the
Nile with an attractive ship portrait. Half leather ledger volume, a little
rubbed, upper joint slightly cracked. 1861-3. On Cressy, a 2nd Rater built in
1853, Robinson was mainly in the Mediterranean and Home Waters, the two track
charts in this section are of a cruise from Naple to Malta and from Malta to
Plymouth. A brief period on Formidable anchored at Sheerness follows,
occupying the months from May to September 1861. Robinson then joins Plover
on a cruise which takes them from Portsmouth to Madeira then on to the
Caribbean, track-charts show both parts of the voyage. The final section
chronicles a placement of HMS Nile on the North American Station, cruises
from Bermuda to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and around the Caribbean. Tack charts
in this section show St. Thomas to Port Royal, Jamaica, Port Royal to Havana,
and Barbados to Jamaica. As is usual with these middy's journal-books, often
mistakenly termed logs, the details are largely fairly mundane, but do
nonetheless give reasonable insight into the nature of life at sea in the
mid-late C19th, and also into the training of young Officers in the British
Navy. An attractive example. |

loss will be seen on the right hand side of the page.Overall though this is
still a very attractive item.Due to these condition problems a low reserve

Letter of
Marque. Large vellum document, dated 1793, being the articles agreed upon the
manning and fitting out for the Cutter "Hope", commanded by Thomas
Hall, mounting ten guns and carrying fifty men and with the King's
Protection, to cruise and capture enemy ships, listing the various terms and
conditions, including shares to be allotted to each crew member, rewards of
one guinea to the first man to discover an enemy ship, twenty guineas to the
first five who board the enemy ship for their bravery, the barring of
stripping prisoners of their clothes, etc., with all of the forty-seven crew
members listed, with each adding his signature or mark against his individual
wax seal, as well details of money advanced to each man, number of shares in
prizes, etc., approx. 60 x 75 cm, framed and glazed Letters of Marque were
issued to armed privateers, giving them the authority to capture and take
enemy ships. This is a particularly scarce type and no similar examples that
list the crew individually are to be found in the National Maritime Museum. |

THIS is
a fantastic document. It confirms the rank of SECOND LIEUTENANT LAND FORCES to
Kenneth William Chambers. The top left corner bears the signature of George
V. Below this is the impressed royal seal. The document measures approx. 16
inches by 12 inches. Ideal for framing. It has been stored folded in three
along its width, but this has had little effect on the document. |

A
stunning and very early example of a ships log, beautifully hand written by
Thomas Hugill Bilsdale on a voyage on ‘The Nancy of London’ from London to Madeira
and back. It is dated and signed on 31st January 1812. Covered in calf with
57 pages in total, it is an extremely rare item and as far as I know, the
first of its type on Ebay. It is essentially a ‘midshipmans’ exercise book’ -
an onboard study of the craft of sailing. It consists of approximately 96
page sides in the study of navigation, a journal of the voyage consisting of
12 sides, one chart and on the last page Psalm 28. O Lord, my back to thee ?
In sighs consume my breath O answer; or I shall become Like those that sleep
in death Regard my supplication, Lord, The cries that repeat, With weeping
eyes, and lifted hands Before thy mercy seat Let me escape the sinners doom,
Who made a trade of ill; And ever speak the person fair Whose blood they mean
to spill. There is no print content in this book; the diagrams, the chart and
the Mariners Compass are all beautifully hand-drawn. The navigational content
includes theoretical exercises such as 'Plane Trigonometry', by 'Gunters'
scale', 'Oblique Trigonometry', 'plane sailing' navigation 'By inspection',
'Traverse sailing', 'Parallel sailing', 'Mercators' sailing', 'Windward
sailing'. This log written by Bilsdale aboard the 'Nancy' on it's voyage in
1812. It is a wonderful example of the training a young officer seaman would
have to endure, under the tuteledge of perhaps the captain himself, as a step
towards perhaps one day having a ship of his own to master. I have close-ups
of the books' contents available to email upon request. |

A very
rare opportunity to bid for a genuine hand written letter by William IV - King
of England. The manuscript is written by William himself and is personally
signed by him. This manuscript is a very important piece of history and is
hugely collectable. Most manuscript of this type are either in Museums or
hidden away in private collections. The manuscript is in very good condition
with only slight browning and paper folds. My collection is completely
genuine and was obtained from and checked by an acknowledged expert in the
Antiquarian Association. Please email me any questions. WILLIAM IV
(1765-1837). King of England. Autograph Letter Signed to Viscount Exmouth, 2½
pages 4to with separate autograph address-panel, Admiralty, 7 June 1827.
Acknowledging his enclosures regarding Commander [Rowland] Mainwaring, and
promising to consider him favourably in the light of Exmouth's testimonials.
'I am to acknowledge your Lordship's enclosures respecting Commander Rowland
Mainwaring whom I must consider most favourably after such testimonials ... I
only hope my conduct at the Admiralty will continue to merit the approbation
of Your Lordship and those who really understand the welfare of the British
Navy.' The Duke of Clarence had been made admiral of the fleet in 1811, which
was little more than a nominal promotion. |

the King's Consul to the Island Kingdom of Sicily. It bears the seal and the
signature of King William IV, and is countersigned by Palmerston, who was
Foreign Secretary at the time. The reverse is sealed and inscribed by the
relevant Italian authorites on Goodwin's presentation of the Commission. This
is in wonderful condition - very clear, not stained or torn at all. The
King's Seal is intact, although that of the Italian authorities is a little
tattered. It has been folded for so long that it is difficult to open it out
without weighting the corners, but the folds are not stained or sharp

terms of service. I'm sure with perseverance and enlargement of the page it
could probably be read.. Also signed by "Neville "and has 2 embossed
