(Charles, divine and hymn-writer, 1707-88) Autograph Letter to Mrs Birkin, at
Spring Gardens, Charing Cross, 2pp. with address panel, 4to, Bristol, 17th
March 1766, commiserating with her on the death of her son, "There I
found you are too well acquainted with my hymns on a like occasion. My
partner & I were much affected by your letter; which tore open an old
wound of heart. She has more of your sorrow than of your resignation - your
son & ours are now rejoicing together, & waiting for their parents to
join them in the New Song, which shall never end", commenting on various
people visiting them including, Mr Townsend, Miss Johnson & Miss Caley
who "talks a little too much for me: but is an excellent soul", his
son Samuel (1766-1836, musician ), "Your Godson Samuel promises he's for
living. I can only pray, that either he may live in God,
or die innocent. I believe no child of mine will ever live to be
wicked", and writing an autograph manuscript hymn, "On the Death of
a Child, An Act of Faith & Resignation", comprising 24 lines in 4
stanzas, first and last lines, "I can, my heart; be calm, be still!/Then my rapture is compleat!", tears along folds (1
corner with text loose) some slightly affecting text but still legible, torn
where opened, 1p. with repairs, slightly browned, a
few stains. Unsigned
but appears complete, the hymn ending the letter. |

Queen
Victoria Royal Grant dated 12 January in the 15th year of the reign of
Victoria (1852) with seal attached, still in nearly perfect condition, a few very
minor chips around the edge but the detail is still all perfect and still
comes in the skippet. The document itself comes framed and is in very good
condition (as you can see, the details of the document below, they are are
completely legible.) Also adding interest is that this document includes some
notable names such as Thomas Farmer and Robert Cantwell. This
document was regarding a Richard Burton of Tunbridge Wells who was of unsound
mind and was changing changing the current trustee to 3 new trustee's. Although we don't know much about Richard
Burton, we do know he had money as he had estates in Kent and Middlesex. The
original trustee named in the document as Thomas Farmer of Gunnersbury House
near Acton was in the chemical industry and bought the small mansion in 1838
and it was kept in the family until 1889 when it was bought by the Rothschild
family. The new trustee's as indicated in this document were Robert Cantwell,
William Foote Mount and Thomas Wooton. Robert Cantwell, a surveyor and architect
was the designer of the crescent at Ladbroke Grove, London and is a noted
architect of his time. William Foote Mount was an esq of St John's Wood and
Thomas Wooton a gent. Size
of the Seal: 6" diameter so this is a large seal. Size of vellum
document: 30" by 22" |

Execution
Warrant. A manuscript execution warrant for Francis Henry De Lamotte, 23rd
July 1781, addressed to Thomas Sainsbury and William Crichton, Sheriff of the
County of Middlesex, in the holograph of James Adair (Recorder) with his
black wax seal and signature at foot, a little soiling, one page, folio Francois
Henri de la Motte was an ex-French Army officer executed in London for High
Treason on 27th July 1781, as indicated in this document. He had been arrested
in January 1781 on suspicion of being a spy and held for six months in the
Tower of London. At an Old Bailey Trial on 23rd July he was found guilty of
running an operation which sent secret Naval Intelligence to France,
concerning British Fleet dispositions at Portsmouth and other British Ports.
Though sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered he was spared to some
extent and after one hour hanging he was taken down, his heart cut out and
burned. A crowd of more than 80,000 people witnessed de la Motte's execution
at Tyborn. |
