CHURCH
WARDENS CLAIM -CHRIST CHURCH, LONDON - 1698 This document is an undated copy
of a claim by the church wardens of Christ Church, Newgate Street, London, on
behalf of the parish against an encroachment on parish land by a neighbouring
tenant at a huse called Pontac's in the passage leading from Newgate Street
to the church, formerly in the possession of Mr Man but now in the possession
of Mr Palser. Dated the 18th day of October in the 12th year of the reign of
George II [1738] The document is probably 18th or 19th century and provides
interesting extracts from the parish vestry minutes relating to the case
between 1693, when James Honnor rented the premises from the Parish, and
1695. Christ Church was rebuilt by Christopher Wren after the great fire of
London, but was heavily bombed in the last war. Medium: Handwritten in
English on paper. Condition: Frayed and browned with several splits and tears

Absolutely
stunning old handwritten Diary Dating from 1777, the title page ascribes this
lovely book to a John Shephard Born Jany 24th 1756. The diary measures 4 x
5.5 inches, it has 65 pages, they are watermarked with red lines on sides, as
in an account ledger.Cover appears to be leather covered but its hard to tell
for sure. Approx half the pages are written on 43 pages have dated accounts
and detailed breakdown of day to day costs, for example in the entry for: May 10th 1778 A piece of silk for breeches......1.1.0 June
8th At the
sailing match .................. 2.0 June
25th Mrs
Hales Coachman ................1.4 also
numerous entries for waistcoats, gloves, silk stockings, buckles, spurs,
scabbard, dinner at Taphouse, White Hart, also references to Addenbroke,
Chelsea, Crippelgate, plus a list of books, including Dr Johnson Lives of the
Poets. Also there are 24 pages of very closely written text, it appears to be
thoughts and remarks by the author, including a numbered list of improvements
to character and ways to behave. This is
such an interesting account of life 230 years ago, it would appear the author
was quite wealthy and well read, and led a cultured life in London. There are
numerous names mentioned as well as place names and dates, therefore it would
be possible to conduct research that shed light on the author and his life. A
really fantastic find for any historian who specialises in this period of
English life. I have been really entranced by it, I find the beautiful
copperplate quite hard to decipher in places but it gets easier the more I
have looked at it. Condition is very good antique, all pages are intact and
clean with only very light age marking is a few place, nothing that detracts
from this beautiful book. Cover is intact and worn on edges. From the images
a Miss Marsh and a Mr Buknell at Yialing (Ealing?) are mentioned. |

found you are too well acquainted with my hymns on a like occasion. My
partner & I were much affected by your letter; which tore open an old
wound of heart. She has more of your sorrow than of your resignation - your
son & ours are now rejoicing together, & waiting for their parents to

people visiting them including, Mr Townsend, Miss Johnson & Miss Caley
who "talks a little too much for me: but is an excellent soul", his
son Samuel (1766-1836, musician ), "Your Godson Samuel promises he's for
living. I can only pray, that either he may live in God, or die innocent. I
believe no child of mine will ever live to be wicked", and writing an

plates are among the Volumes 13, 14, 15, 16 - I would have purchased these
but as Daniel writes with the belief that the work is finished I think it
right to wait for more positive instructions before I expend eight Guineas
for him and involve him further expense of at least Twenty Guineas more to
complete a work which some of the subjects are already treated under opinions
which are obsolete...", etc. Has
been folded and has written on the top "Extract sent to D W P Britania

Written
in 1798, an attested copy of a 1735 indenture relating to the conveyance of
property and land in Brant Broughton, in the county of Lincoln. The principal
parties involved are Benjamin Robinson citizen and Haberdasher of London, now
or late living at Stroutian in Argyl, Richard Marriott of Mansfield,
Nottingham, Tallow Chandler and John Leavers of Nottingham, butcher. Where
Benjamin Robinson sells land and property John Leavers for a combined price
of £1400, but where Richard Marriott as mortgager pays the principal sum. The
property is a farm, 3 cottages and numerous pieces of land all in Brant
Broughton, Lincoln. Details regarding past and present occupants are given
along with numerous field names. The document also provides information about
other parties involved and the legal requirements and obligations. This
indenture precedes another document I have listed the other 1798 attested
copy of a 1735 indenture. A large
indenture on 3 pages of paper each measuring 1 foot 1 inch by 1 foot 4
inches. Written on two sides, there is beautiful hand written script
throughout that is easy to read. The document is in excellent condition and
also has the benefit of stamps, watermarks and a series beautiful signatures.
There are two; six shillings eight pence impressed stamps and two, halfpenny
ink stamps. The watermarks include two, J WICKWAR 1794 two symbols of
Britannia with crown above and one, JW HATMAN 1794. |

An 1809
indenture regarding the lease of a house in the parish of Saint Leonard
Shoreditch, Middlesex. The persons involved are Alexander Perrie on the first
part and William Napier of Grand Junction Wharf White Friars, London, on the
other part. Where Mr. Perrie leases the property to Mr. Napier for 45 and ½
years. The property is No.27 Essex Street and further boundaries are
described along with plan showing dimensions and measurements. It is rare for
a manuscript of this age to have a plan more than half a century before the
first ordnance survey maps were produced. Further details are given about the
persons involved, their legal obligations and the terms of the lease
including the upkeep of the property. There
is an additional indenture on the reverse dated 1845 referring to the sale of
the same property but now re-numbered to No.15. Other persons are involved
including James Theobald, butcher and George Gifford of Newington, Toll
Collector. On one
large sheet of vellum measuring 2 feet 3 and ½ inches by 1 foot 10 and ½
inches. In very good condition, no holes or tears, but with discolouration
due to age. Written on both sides there is beautiful hand written script
throughout that is clear and easy to read. It has a plan, which is rare for a
document of this age. One stamp has been removed but on the reverse is
another blue ten shillings duty tax stamp with a piece of silver attached.
There are also four red wax seals each with a signature. |

An 1844
indenture regarding the assignment of a house and land in the parish of Saint
Leonard Shoreditch, Middlesex. The parties involved are Henry James Wilkins
of Aldgate High Street, London and Elizabeth his wife on the first part,
Peter Henry Pidgeon of Highstreet, Pawnbroker and Mary Lunson Pidgeon
Spinister, on the second part John Salt of Acton and William Chapple pf
Holborn on the third part and George Gifford of Devonshire Place Green Lanes
Newington on the fourth part. The
document recites a large part previous indenture dated 1797 between William
Ditchman and Joseph Risdon where it refers to land and the building of two
new houses. These houses came into the possession of John Lunson who assigned
one of them to William Taylor in 1835 who it turn assigned the property to
George Gifford in 1837. The other house stayed with John Lunson who as noted
in this indenture made a will dated 1824. Mr. Acton and Mr. Chapple are the
executors of that will. He gave his house to his daughter Elizabeth who in turn
married James Wilkins and together they had two children Peter and Mary
Pidgeon. Now Elizabeth is of an age where she is unlikely to have any more
children. So that now George Gifford purchases the assignment of leasehold
for a sum of £30. The
property is in Huntingdon Street. An extensive description of boundaries is
given with reference to measurements and directions as noted in the recite of
the 1797 indenture along with the name of the previous occupant as mentioned
in the current indenture. Further details are given about the persons
involved, their legal obligations and the terms of the assignment. On one
large sheet of vellum, measuring 2 feet 4 and ½ inches by 2 feet. The
document is in excellent condition. There is beautiful hand written script
throughout that is large, clear and easy to read. The duty stamp has been
removed but there are seven nice red wax seals each showing a ‘h’ and each
with a signature. |
