Two page parchment document dated 1852: Margaret Aughton, wife of Linnaeus Aughton sworn at Liverpool, Lancashire regarding property in Liverpool Other names mentioned in this document are Richard Aughton, John Aughton, William Tristram Knightley, Algernon Payne, William Shepherd & Isaac Oliver Jones . Certificate of acknowledgement of a deed by a married woman This is a guaranteed genuine Victorian parchment document consisting of at least two pages.

These certificates were introduced as part of the Fines and Recoveries Act of 1833.  Their purpose was to ensure that, where a married woman was selling or mortgaging property jointly with her husband, she was of full age and completely understood what was taking place.  Given that any property belonging to a woman automatically passed to her husband upon marriage, I am not convinced that this would have made any difference but, apparently, common law required her to be a party to any deed and these acknowledgements were intended to prevent the husband from abusing his position in those cases where he inherited property through his marriage.  Although votes for women were still some way off, the Married Women’s Property Act of 1882 gave them the same rights over their own property as if they had been single or widowed.

This indenture was made on the 24th September, 1781, between Thomas William Coke, Esq, of Longford, Derby, and John Whiteley of Crompsall and refers to 26 acres of farming land in Lancashire and the payment of rent of £38.10.0. yearly.  The beneficiaries appear to be three children - Ann Bowker (8 years), Hannah Bowker (6 years) and John Bowker (4 years). the children of Charles Bowker. (I hazard a guess these are the heirs of Thomas Coke). This indenture is I think of vellum and is in a fragile condition.  The seal has damaged the document where it has been folded and there are some tears.

These two sets of documents appear to be "acknowledgements of deeds by married women" - the second below clearly states such and the other appears similar. The first appears to be a transfer property from Susan, wife of John Palmer Palmer, to the Parish of Saint Bees Parish in the County of Cumberland, sworn at Wigtown 1866. The second set of documents appears to relate to Mary, wife of Peter Wyche, giving interest in the rents and premises to Abraham Smith in Levenshulme, sworn in the County of Lancaster1849. O my dear I now remember your words in following Harry Knight but it is now too late & my poor father and mother I hope in god they eill not frett themselves as it will do no good..., my love to Wm and Molley Yates and Beg Molley to be as good to my Children as she can & my love to all enquiring friends & my love to you my dear in the hour of death...', a full page, with start of another letter to verso concerning his clothes and reiterating that 'Hall Knight has been my ruin... Farewell', written in a clear open hand, some spotting and minor tears with archival tissue repair to verso, folio
'Until 1800, condemned criminals at Lancaster were executed at a place called Gallows Hill, on the moors close to Williamson Park. As many as eight or nine condemned prisoners and their coffins would be carried in the bottom of a cart. The procession from the Castle would pass along Moor Lane and Moor Gate, stopping at the Golden Lion public house at the corner of Brewery Lane in order that the condemned prisoners could take their last drink, accompanied by their friends and relatives. Execution day also brought people from all over the North West of England out onto the streets of Lancaster to witness the hangings... Out of 200 executions at Lancaster Castle, only 43 were for murder; other crimes included burglary, passing forged notes, robbery and cattle-stealing. Of those 200 executions, 131 are reputed to have been carried out by one hangman - Old Ned Barlow.' (Lancaster Castle website).
