Hello
this auction is for one Indenture and seven letters relating to the
indenture dated 1867. The letters are all dated before the indenture, they are
all written to the solicitor and some seam to relate to a disagreement
between the two men in the indenture, the other letters seam to be from
people demanding money from one of the men. We can’t be certain of this as
all of the letters and the indenture are written in old English and
calligraphy so it is difficult to decipher the words. The indenture is
entitled ‘Release and Indemnity’ dated 1867. ‘Between Barton John Wheeler of Aldermore Lodge Old
Shirley Southampton Yeoman and William Halcher Barton of Chale Abbey Farm in
the Isle of Wight Esquire…’ It has two pages and one red seal signed by
Barton John Wheeler. When folded it measures approx 9 x10 inches and when
open to full size it measures approx 23 x29 inches. There are also two blue
pieces of paper attached to the document one has ‘one pound fifteen
shillings’ the other has ‘ten shillings’ written on them. At the back of the
paper where they are attached they have a small piece of paper glued over
them with a royal emblem and the letters VR. All indentures are in totally
solid, un-torn condition, when folded exteriors are aged, but good quality
indentures and when opened very bright and clear, please see pics |

Hello
this auction is for a Release and Indemnity
indenture - in excellent condition, packed full of stamps, seals and all
beautifully written by quill in calligraphy. It is dated 5th April 1871,
between Walter Wheeler of Budbridge Farm in The Isle of Wight, and Frank
Barton of Heasley, Isle of Wight –It seems to be a bequeath of ‘live &
dead farming stock implements and utensils in husbandry, crops household
goods furniture plate linen and china moneys personal estate chattels &
effects’. On Frank Bartons death the trustees are William Hatcher Barton of
Chale Abbey Farm and Edward Love Griffiths of Newport. They are to carry on
his Farming & Grazing Business. Monies to be paid to his 5 children
Barton John Wheeler, Walter Wheeler, and daughters Mary Anne Duke (widow of
James Duke, now the wife of William hooker), Selina Wheeler (now the wife of
Robert Cole) and Louisa Eliza Wheeler. It is a large indenture with the 2 wax
seals & signatures to the bottom, and measures 76 x 59 cm. This is a very
interesting piece of Isle of Wight History, and might be helpful to anyone
researching their ancestry or history of the farms / land concerned. It’s
also very comprehensive, and I haven’t managed to read through all of it. In
the center of the text there is a blank space for dates & signatures to
be inserted, but it has been left unsigned. I did wonder if the either of the
Walter Wheelers mentioned was the known cricketer born in 1841 in Newport. We
will be listing a few more indentures over the next week. |
