Pedigree
of Butcher of Danesfort, Kilarney, County Kerry 1761-1926, illuminated by
Arthur Herbert Butcher, c. 1920's, illuminated calligraphic manuscript on 70
vellum leaves, unbound, approximately 11x8ins A magnificent historical
manuscript. The Butcher family, who originally emanated from Hertfordshire,
were one of the major families in the Kilarney area in the 19th c. and
remained so until after independence when they appear to have left - at a
time when many non-catholic families were leaving Ireland. The Butcher's had
an illustrious history with one member being the High Sherriff of
Bedfordshire in 1761, John Barlow Butcher was wounded at Sevastopol, George
Hastings Butcher was a Captain in the 42nd Gurkha Regiment, and they also
numbered a Vice-Admiral in their ranks. John Butcher, created first Baron
Danesfort in 1924, was a noted lawyer and MP for York - he was famous enough
to be featured by Spy in Vanity Fair and a portrait of him hangs in the
National Portrait Gallery. The present manuscript is a fine example of
illuminated calligraphy with highly decorative title page, borders and 19
portrait miniatures (one excised). |

Irish Printers.-
Grierson family. Archive of papers and genealogies relating to the Grierson
family, printers of Dublin, manuscripts, notebooks with transcripts of
letters, receipts etc., some heraldic pen and ink drawings, numerous
typescripts, most loose or in files, notebooks in various bindings,
[nineteenth century - twentieth century]; and a quantity of others, Irish
family (some Quaker) pedigrees and genealogies, v.s. (qty). A detailed
archive compiled by Colonel J.R.H. Greeves (Irish historian, author of Two
Irish Printing Families) on George Grierson and his family, Dublin printers
in the eighteenth century. The Grierson family of Lag and Rockhall held large
holdings in Dumfries and Kircudbright early in the fifteenth century. George
Grierson, a wealthy printer settled in Dublin in 1703 and began to produce
Bibles and Books of Common Prayer at his new premises, "The Sign of the
Two Bibles and King's Arms" in Essex Street. Grierson's second wife,
Constantia Philips was said to be one of the cleverest women of her
generation, "a most accomplished scholar and a friend of Dean
Swift". The business prospered and Grierson was admitted a Freeman of
Dublin in 1709 and in 1730 was made King's Printer for Ireland. The patent
was handed down to George Abraham Grierson who was described as "a man
of uncommon learning and great wit and vivacity" and well respected by
Samuel Johnson. |

Interesting
manuscript letter to a Wiltshire clergyman dated August 2nd, 1798, making
extensive references to the rebellion then taking place in Ireland, as well
as referring to a highway robbery, written in a neat legible hand, 3pp 4to.
This extremely interesting letter provides a clue to English attitudes
towards the 1798 rebellion, which was caused by the growth of the Society of
United Irishmen and its aims of making the Irish parliament much more
representative of all religions. Frustration at the British Government's
refusal to increase Catholic representation, rebellion became inevitable, and
this was put down with severe violence. In this letter, the author, Mr D
Turner (possibly a clergyman) writes to his friend the Rev J Briggs of
Devizes, and comments: '...what dreadful work does the pride and ignorance of
mankind make in the world? Much to blame I believe on both sides, tho' much
the greatest on the severity of the ruling powers I believe and now they talk
of the rebellion being at an end - it may be so at present but unless very
wise ajust and benevolent measures are taken on the side of Government, and
more real knowledge , virtue and piety prevail among the people there will be
no settled permanent tranquility' - a truly prophetic letter! |

Inquisition - Sir George Carew.
Important document on a single leaf of vellum, c.1629, being the findings of
an inquisition into the death of Sir George Carey [Carew], friend of Sir
Walter Raleigh and President of Munster, written in a flowing secretarial hand,
in fine fresh condition Inquisitions were instituted during the reign of
Henry III and were enquiries into lands held by people of status in order to
ascertain what was owing to the Crown in terms of income and rights. Carew
(or Carey) was an important figure in late Elizabeth/early Jacobean England.
In 1584 he was appointed gentleman-pensioner to Queen Elizabeth, whose favour
he had gained, and in 1586 he was knighted in Ireland. Refusing the embassy
to France, Sir George Carew was made master of the ordnance in Ireland in
1588, in 1590 Irish privy councillor, and in 1592 lieutenant-general of the
ordnance in England, in which capacity he accompanied Essex in the expedition
to Cadiz in 1596. He was appointed treasurer at war to Essex in Ireland in March
1599, and on the latter's sudden departure in September of the same year,
leaving the island in disorder, Carew was appointed a lord justice, and in
1600 president of Munster, where his vigorous measures enabled the new lord
deputy, Lord Mountjoy, to suppress the rebellion. He returned to England in
1603 and was well received by James I, who appointed him vice-chamberlain to
the Queen the same year, master of the ordnance in 1608, privy councillor in
1616, and on the accession of Charles I he became treasurer to Queen
Henrietta Maria in 1626. He sat for Hastings in the parliament of 1604, and
on 4th June 1605 was created Baron Carew of Clopton, being advanced to the
earldom of Totnes on 5th February 1626. In 1610 he revisited Ireland to
report on the state of the country and in 1618 pleaded in vain for his friend
Sir Walter Raleigh. He died on 27th March 1629, leaving no issue - hence the
present document. |

Georgian
Handwritten Memorandum Book. A well bound note book made of hand laid paper, marbled
boards with the spine and corners in leather. Spine has the words 'Memoranda
1801' faintly tooled in black. The book measures 202mm x 169mm. Except for a
small split to the spine, some faded ink and about ten missing pages,
condition is very good. First entry is dated '1801, July the 13th.' and
beneath, written in very neat, easy to read black ink handwriting, it says:
'I have this day given my bond to Mrs. Wilson for £100 - payable to her or
her order, with interest, on the 13th of July 1804.' Entries continue over
ten pages until 1806 where the writer records the death of his brother.
Between 1801 and 1806 there are entries regarding various financial
transactions, personal reflections on University politics, his brothers life.
There is an interesting entry regarding a picture of Richard the Third by
Hans Hohlbein he lent to a Lady Moira, so she could get copies made. I am
glad to report she returned the picture in person on Octobre the first, 1802.
The first owner of this book seems to have been a Don, respectively professor
of Physic teaching at a University in Ireland. He reflects on having to
introduce a doctor of doubtful qualifications from the University of Dublin
to the Senior Fellows. His brother was a Joseph Hill and he was uncle to his
brother's son Thomas Hill. It appears that the Hill family held land in
Carrigeen, Knockane, Iveigh, Farrankindery and parts of Bollygarrold in the
county of Tipperary. A certain Robert Carew, seems to have played a role in
the life of Thomas Hill and the Don. Next there seems to have been a change
of ownership and the hand is very italic, with the black Ink having somewhat
faded. The new owner fills about 60 pages with poetry. The most fascinating
entry here I find the listing of the hidden meaning of the months and their
associated gemstones, flowers, fruit and vegetables in Victorian poetry. Did
you know, that a potato stands for 'Benevolence'? Or that lily of the valleys
symbolize 'return to happiness'. After five missing pages a third hand
appears; again poetry in italic handwriting. This time the ink is strong
sepia. The new author seems to have an interest in Napoleon Bonaparte,
judging by poems with titles such as 'St. Helena' or 'Imaginary Apostrophe on
N. Bonaparte'. 'Extracts from Lallah Rooks' is the final entry and stretches
over 16 pages. Just over half of the book is blank, with the odd page removed
- probably as note paper. This is a delightful manuscript of Georgian and
Victorian texts. |

[Decrees].
The Pedigree of the Claimant how he driveth from the Propreter or Professor
in Anno 1641, manuscript, 69pp. including a large folding index, ruled in red
throughout, slightly foxed and browned, bookplate of Samuel Tudor on front
pastedown, original gilt panelled calf, slightly rubbed, corners bumped,
g.e., 8vo, Tuesday, 13th January 1662 - Friday, 21st August 1663. £200 - 300
An interesting register detailing various families and their legal status
according to the Act of Settlement of 1662. Lord Dunsany (Patrick Plunket,
exiled and restored in 1662, d. 1668) is listed as a "nocent" and
claims lands in Meath and Dublin. The register of Catholic families divides
them into "innocents" and "nocents" by the Act of
Settlement in Ireland, a somewhat complex piece of legislation passed in
1662. The Act dealt with the resitution or reprising of land in various
counties which had been awarded under the Cromwellian Settlement to soldiers
and English Adventurers [Protestants who had advanced money for the Civil
War, to remove Papacy and establish Protestantism] which affected Protestants
and Catholics alike. Passed by a Puritan House of Commons, Protestants were
usually returned their lands promptly but the laws relating to Catholics were
harsher. 600 Catholics claims were heard out of 4000 and in the majority of
cases proved "innocent". At this there was a Protestant outcry and
a Catholic backlash and another Act, this time of Explanation in 1665. This
Act stripped the remaining 3400 of any further legal claim on their fathers
lands. |

of the Pedigree (not complete) of the McCarty family dating back to 1683 on
1835 watermarked paper. Without wishing to name drop but I will, Charles
McCarthy, Joseph Capel, Lucy Kavenagh, Sir Thomas Judkin. Daniel
McCarty,Captain in King Williams service and Justin McCarty , Captain in
Queen Ann’s Service and many more. Family appears to have had interests in
Tipperary, Whitchurch, Carnever Bullygunne and else where. Some water marking
and repairs but its all well written and legible bearing mind its has
travelled a bit in the last 170 years, including USA. The paperwork appears
to be dealing with family “Monies”. Page sizes 16”x 13”. One entry is for a
land sale in 1784 for £4269( $7K). when you could buy 400 acres on
Pennsylvania for £200. what would it cost today?? |

Lovely
bundle of old documents relating to the Lane family of Co. Cork, Ireland.
First is a handwritten letter by Daniel Lane in 1803. This is addressed to
his children, explaining his will. His children are named as Samuel, John, Francis,
Jane and Catherine. Second document is the very lengthy will made by Daniel
Lane of the Finn Barrs, City of Cork, merchant. Mentions children and also
Sarah Sandiford his sister, son James Lane, childrens grandfather Francis
Beck. Seems to be dated 1819 and 1820. Several pages in length - needs close
reading and some research but lots of family information. Compete with
signatures and seal - in fairly fragile condition with splits along folds.
Next document is an indenture dated 1869 between William Lane Jnr. and Eliza
Gray Landale of Melville Place, Portabello near Edinburgh Scotland. Another
very lengthy document (several pages) - also refers to Oliver and Rebecca
Dowlin of Charleville in the County of Cork and James Landale of Liverpool.
Lastly is a long, hand-written will by Samuel Lane of St Finn Barr's in the
County of Cork. Unable to see date and this is in fragile condition. Mentions
lots of family members including children Samuel, John, Frank and sisters
Elizabeth and Eliza Lane. Also requests a trust for "the use of
twenty-five poor Protestant residents in the Parish of St Finn Barr's to be
expended in the purchase of Bread and distributed to them in St Barr's Church
near the Chancel after the second service...." |

offer to eBay bidders for a limited time only.As the title describes, this is
a Victorian indenture, wax sealed and dated
as per photograph. A geniune artifact from Irish land ownership and transfers
from the period. Mostly hand written and 100% true. There are many historical
details in this indenture which are directly relevant to County Carlow,
Ireland and its environs. I am offering this document with no reserve but
must advise potential bidders that this item is also for sale elsewhere and
this auction may be terminated at anytime with no notice. The history of the
Burtons in Carlow is long and varied. They were a major force with a very
compassionate attitude towards there employees, so it says. This hand written
contract will be of immense historical value to people from this region.
Thank You for time. More details on request as this certificate is not
available to me at the moment but will be on 04/05 2005 ( 2days ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On
06-May-05 at 14:09:36 BST, seller added the following information: I now
have this indenture in my possession. It is hand signed Edward William Burton
of Brownshill, Carlow and dated 11th december 1840. It appears to concern the
leasing of property belonging to Edward Burton to The Governors and Guardians
of The Hospital founded by Richard Stevens and their successors. (This
probably relates to St. Stevens Hospital in Dublin). There is a second
Indenture on the other side which was made on 19th Nov 1861 Bridget Longfield Burton of Rutland Lodge
in the County of Carlow widow of Sir Charles William Cuffe Burton of
Pollerton House, Carlow. This is a Last Will signed "Longfield Bridget
Burton" with the Burtons wax seal attached. |

readable, written on paper I believe. |
