Baron Thomas Dimsdale. Important and historic document on five sheets of vellum, bearing the signature of Thomas Dimsdale, one of the pioneers of vaccination, dated August 19th, 1768, being the assignment of Cowley Hall Farm, Great Munsden, Hertfordshire for two terms of 500 and 1000 years to Stephen Haggard, some dusting to outer surface but interior contents in fine condition. Thomas Dimsdale, who held a medical degree from Aberdeen, published a paper on inoculating for small pox and as a result Catherine the Great brought him to St Petersburg where he inoculated her on October 12th 1768 - some six weeks after the date of the present document. Catherine had volunteered to set an example and although she developed some symptoms, she returned to full duties within three weeks. Dimsdale declared the experiment a success and many followed the her example. Dimsdale, a leading Quaker, was created a Baron for his services to medicine in Russia. A fine and historic document which will be of considerable interest to local historians and genealogists of the Great Munsden area.

Essex (Walter Devereux, first Earl of, second Viscount Hereford, father of Robert Devereux, favourite of Elizabeth I 1567-1601, coloniser of Ulster, 1541?-76) Indenture between Walter Devereux and John Pigott, yeoman, of the Manor of Bennington, Hertfordshire, D.s. "W Essex" & "W Ferrers?", manuscript on vellum, 2ff., 6 holes affecting text, water-stained, 2 wax seals, 560 x 450 & 95 x 261mm., 17th November 1572. In 1573 Essex undertook the colonisation of Ulster and to bring it under English control. "In a formal agreement the queen made over to Essex the country of Clandeboye, excluding only the town of Carrickfergus and some mountainous districts to the north" (DNB). His attempts to colonise Ireland brought misery and bloodshed to the land and achieved nothing. Devereux attempted to win the support of Sorley Boy Macdonnell, a Scots-Irish chieftain against the inhabitants, a strategy at odds with his orders. In 1574 he committed the despicable crime of inviting MacPhelim to a banquet in Belfast and then murdered him and his attendants. The queen recalled him in 1575 and he began to withdraw but not before he organised a raid on Rathlin island in which Sorley Boy's family were slaughtered. "When Sir Henry Sidney, the new lord-deputy, visited Clandeboye and other parts of Ulster in the following November, he found it 'utterly disinhabited' - such was the final result of Essex's scheme of an Ulster plantatiom." - DNB.
