Gloucester Docks. Vellum conveyance of 1855 for
lands at Llanthony, Gloucester to provide a dockyard for the Gloucester and
Dean Forest Railway Company with the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal, two large
sheets of vellum, usual dusting on the outside, with one small area cut away
(not affecting text), the second sheet bearing a coloured manuscript plan of
the area of land An interesting document in the development of the commercial
potential of railways at the height of 'Railway Mania' and an interesting
juxtaposition of two transport cultures. The Gloucester and Dean Forest
Railway was built to bring the coal and timber from the Forest of Dean down
to Gloucester where it could be transported down the Gloucester and Berkeley
canal (now known as the Sharpness Canal) and thence to the sea. The Canal is
still in operation as one of the few truly commercial canals in the country.
The railway closed, but a small section of it is still in use as a tourist
attraction. |

Three
large scale manuscript estate plans, c. 1851-63, showing the Compton Estate,
the Bromsberrow Place Estate and Bromsberrow Heath in Gloucestershire, each
drawn in black ink with colour wash to fields, with extensive identification
of ownerships, tenant holdings, etc., the map of Bromsberrow Heath
incorporates an extensive indenture on three leaves of vellum relating to the
enclosure of the common land of the Heath for private ownership, some
creasing, dusting and scuffing, but in generally good legible condition, one
laid on linen Of particular interest to local historians of this area of
Gloucestershire, providing considerable information on land ownership in the
area in the mid 19th c., plus details on the enclosure of formerly common
land. |

to property transactions in the Cotswolds area of Gloucestershire, and in
particular the Parish of Guiting Power, some dusting and scuffing but

considerable amount of local historical and genealogical information for what

village lying almost equidistant between Cheltenham and Stow on the Wold.

Gloucestershire Militia. Manuscript summons 1p
folio, August 11th 1709, requiring Anne Pauncefoot 'at Preston within the
County of Gloucestershire' to appear before the Deputy Lieutenant of the
County because she had failed 'to find or provide one trained Horse and
horseman and Armes to serve in the Militia of the Sd County', signed by
Richard Cocks and Maynard Colchester, with manuscript note to the foot
stating that Anne had been required to pay for five years in lieu of providing
the required man and beast, some weakness in the folds but a very attractive
document. Rare. The process of providing men and horses for local fighting
armies goes back to Saxon times. Before the establishment of a modern
standing professional army and civilian police, law and order was maintained
by the raising of local Militias which were staffed by men and horses
provided by local landowners, pro rata to their land holding. In the same
year as this document, Queen Anne vetoed a bill to reorganise the Scottish
Militia - the very last time the Royal veto was used. (1) £50-80 |

Vellum
recovery document of George IV for lands of the Manor of Eyford (Exford),
Gloucestershire, dated Trinity Term 1822, featuring a fine portrait of George
III contained within an elaborate initial "G", decorative borders
featuring allegorical figures etc., remains of Royal seal contained within
original metal skippet attached by original vellum tag, in good overall
condition. Obviously, even two years after the death of George III, the
authorities had not yet produced a flattering enough image of his debauched
son. The lands involved in this document were extensive involving 35
messuages, 6 dovehouses, 120 gardens, 1,600 acres of land, 300 acres of
meadows, 1,000 acres of pasture, 360 acres of woods, 500 of furze and heath,
300 of moor, 300 of marsh, 500 covered with water and common pasture. A most
significant document for this area of Gloucestershire which lies just north
west of the popular tourist area of Upper Slaughter. |

Important
and historic manuscript document on two large sheets of vellum, dated August 20th,
1666, being the will of Grimbald Pauncefoot detailing bequests to the poor in
his parish of Pauntly, Gloucestershire, and bequests of his land in
Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, as well as his furniture and household
items written in a remarkably legible hand and in fine overall condition,
together with three other 17th c. wills from other counties including one
dated 1603 and one made during the Commonwealth bearing the device of Oliver
Cromwell as Lord Protector. Wills from such an early period are scarce on the
market - and Pauncefoot's will is particularly extensive indicating that he
was an important landowner of the time. As well as his landholdings in
Pauntly, he also has lands and property in Newent, Gloucestershire and
Stanton in Worcestershire. As his will is dated just six years after the
Restoration his landholding must have continued through the Commonwealth
period - no mean achievement for the time! |

Bristol. Printed broadside issued by 'the Widow
Penn' bookseller in Wine Street, Bristol, February 14th, 1725, announcing the
building of the new docks in Bristol and listing the new regulations,
approximately 18x14ins. The broadside announces that the Mayor and Burgesses
of the City have built 'two several keys or wharfs for landing of goods' the
first on the River Avon at the east side of King Street and the other on the
River Froom on St Augustine's Back. As a consequence of the new keys being
established, the broadside also announces six new regulations for use of the
rivers and the docks. |

Large
and attractive vellum indenture dated June 1st, 1663, with elaborate initial
letter circling the Regal year of 1663, detailing the sale of the Manor of
Hyde, in very fine clean and clear condition, signed by Henry Partridge with
original pendant wax seal attached by original vellum tag A document of great
interest. In addition to the various lands and properties on the Manor, the
document grants the rights to claim the goods and chattels of outlaws - one
wonders whether it still has any legal validity ! Property includes the land,
messuages, common pasture, dovehouses, woods, fishing rights, mines,
quarries, rights of the Manorial Court, Royalties etc. (1) |

Bristol Murders. Two scarce printed pamphlets on
celebrated Bristol murders, 1741 and 1802, paper covers to both, fraying at
edges, not affecting text, some dusting to outer covers, first pamphlet with
two engraved plates, one showing the murder taking place, 4to and 8vo. The
first pamphlet deals with the murder of Sir John Dineley Goodere ' who was
murdered by the contrivance of his own brother on board the Ruby man of war
in King's Road, Bristol January 19th 1740-1' . The second pamphlet deals with
the trial of Maria Davis and Charlotte Bobbett, who were convicted and hanged
for the gruesome murder of Maria's 15 month old son Richard. (2) |

Important
document on vellum dated January 24th 1455, written in an attractive chancery
hand on a single leaf of vellum, in remarkably fine fresh condition, with two
perfect red wax pendant seals, one armorial and the other the seal of the
Mayor of Bristol. The document appoints Richard Wykes and Henry Leverygge to
deliver in the name of Leonard Laury to John Newton and his wife Isabella,
free possession and seisin in properties in 'Shepeham Wyntred Woodbarow
Wynescombe Cheddar Banewelle Rowbarow Churche Hille Overlandgford
Netherlangford Stokke Wryngton Lyghe & Strode.' Because Laury's seal is
unknown to many he has procured the seal of the Mayor of Bristol to this
deed, and Richard Hatter, Mayor has agreed to this special request. All the
lands referred to are in the Mendips area of Somerset south of the City.
Medieval documents from this period rarely survive in such fine condition |
