MANUSCRIPT FROM KING'S COURT REIGN OF CHARLES I . MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT This being
an ALIENATION DOCUMENT GRANTED TO THOMAS FFOUFTON TO WHOM ALL THAT MESSUAGE
OR TENEMENT SITUATE AND BEING IN MUCH HARINGTON IN THE COUNTY OF ESSEX This
item is a King's Court document for the Reign of Charles I. It is dated
between 1629 and 1631 as it clearly refers to Lord Cottington as being the
Chancellor of the Exchequer. On the 12th of November 1628 Lord Cottington was
made a privy councillor, and in March 1629 appointed Chancellor of the
Exchequer. In the autumn of 1629 he was sent as ambassador to Spain; he
signed the treaty of peace of the 5th of November 1630, and subsequently a
secret agreement arranging for the partition of Holland between Spain and
England in return for the restoration of the Palatinate. On the 10th of July
1631 he was created Baron Cottington of Hanworth in Middlesex. SIGNED BY

[Maberly
exchequer plea] Plea explaining
Non-payment of Taxes The
gist of this 1820 plea, made by Thomas Maberly, is that he can't pay his tax
bill due to a defaulting debtor. He
cites the debtor as John Vince who welched on an 1816 £200 obligation bond. There's also much mention of a James Bush
and it seems very likely that John Vince had signed the bond in good faith on
a promise from James Bush. Wonder what
happened? Paper, 2 sheets approx
10"x15". (ref 236/19) |

[Ashdon
property deed] Lease of House and Land This 1606
lease is of a property know then as Whitehands (the occupant at the time
being John Whitehand) together with several plots of land including 2 close
called Ladyfield and a meadow called Platt's Meadow. Unusual inasmuch as there were 3 joint
lessors (Thomes Wale of Radwinter and John Cowle & John Gardener, both of
Ashdon) and 3 joint lessees (John Smythe of Clare in Suffolk, William
Nightingale of [Saffron] Walden and John Wayte of Wethersfield). Single parchment sheet approx
19"x12", worn through where old folds cross, some waterstaining but
perfectly legible. Bears signatures of
2 of the lessees (John Smyth and John Wayte) thus making this the counterpart
copy of the lease. Ideally this needs
careful flattening - having been folded for the best part of 400 years hasn't
exactly been the ideal storage condition.

the inn passed to the Bush family. 2 or 3 deeds have recent tears through

This
really is a lovely piece of Victorian history. It is a book that contains
many handwritten poems, thoughts, sonnets etc. I believe it belonged to a
young girl by the name of MARY EUGENIA MONEY. It appears to date circa 1818
onwards. (From the IGI, there is a record of a Mary Eugenia Money, born
around 1800, of Walthamstow, Essex). I have done a small bit of research on
the internet and was able to find a picture of this young woman.Perhaps if
someone has more time and know-how than myself they may be able to find out
the history behind her. She has created a contents page, listed below are
some of the contents titles: ON THE

DEATH OF HUGH ELLIOTT PEARSON THE
HOUR OF PRAYER EASTER

makes this even more charming is that at the end of the book she has turned
the book upside down and written on the reverse of some of the pages. With
regards to condition it is in excellent condition considering the age. However
it appears that a few of the pages are missing. |

deed in very good condition from the 8th year of the reign of King
George. Dated 1721. Counties stated include Middlesex and
Essex. This really is in great condition with the usual folds and creases
with no tears. Very neatly handwritten
but the style I find difficult to interpret.
The names stated on the deed include Russell, Dixon, Fitzgerard and
Windey, and the deed is signed by Wendey and Dixon. Wax seals still present and there are three
blue sixpenny stamps down the side of the deed. I generally only deal in books and have

one manuscript / legal document from an interesting collection I acquired

believe these were probably kept together for that charity. I have a few more

1590, most likely to be a dispute over property and tried in London in the
Court of Common Pleas, one of the three highest courts in the country.
Measuring approx 14 iches wide x 10.5 inches high. With three nice seals
attached, one being a lovely large chancery seal. And to expound a little
...... although in latin, the dispute seems to be between two parties, both
with the christian name Willo the case had a novel ring to it Willo vs Willo,
one party having the surname Bogiff and having the alias name Bigge (Big).
The signature on the left hand side is that of the Lord chief Justice of the
court of common pleas Edmund Anderson (Knight), who had a rise to power
throughout the years of the Elizabethan court holding various titles of
prestige and power. The scribes surname seems to read as Falstaff within the
signature at the bottom right of this document. (From the image, I do not
read this as Falstaff, but ....ball? |
