Group of
nine documents relating to the Essex Militia, 1804-1812, documents on paper,
four printed, rest manuscript, all in good condition. An interesting group of
documents relating to a coastal Militia during the Napoleonic Wars. During
these years England faced the real threat of invasion by the French, and the
Militia, particularly in front line coastal areas of the South East was
particularly important in the defence of the Realm. The present group
includes a manuscript letter from a volunteer, original printed enrolment
certificates, a manuscript list of names with money entries, presumably pay
for serving, two manuscript orders issued by the Officer Commanding and a
manuscript list of members of the Militia who had enlisted into the regular
forces, with regiments into which they enlisted, dated 1812. |

This is
a collection of old documents which date from the reign of Queen Elizabeth
the first.1533-1603 Through to William and Mary and so on. The documen
relating to Elizabeth the first is in reasonable order, it is an indenture
and it clearly states it was written in the seventeenth year of the reign
which would be 1575.The second document is an indenture dated the 6th year of
William and Mary which would be the year of her death 1694. Reasonable order.
The third is a conveyance document dated 1799 of a house and lands called
Daisy Bank in Warley (Essex?). Fourth is an indenture, a small one in the
first year of George the Third's reign, this has a wax seal on it.Fifth is
another indenture dated 1691, Sixth is a conveyance for number 7 Waterloo st
Plymouth, The street still exists. This is dated 1866. Seventh is a charter
dated 1657 which would be King Charles the second. Eighth is a letter in
French accompanied by an English translation. Thjis is not dated but refers
to an errant sailor who left France at the start of the French revolution so
it must be late late 18th or early 19th century. The writer is trying to get
this errant and wayward sailor arrested for desertion.Ninth is a decree from
the courts to theDuke of Leeds dated 1802. Tenth is a small page of writing
in Latin, eleventh is an indenture I can't read the date but it has top be
15th or 16th century. twelvth is another indenture dated 1679. All documents
are reasonable to good order. |

cheesemonger, was a nephew of the well-known London mayor and charitable
benefactor Sir John Moore; he lived with Sir John in his latter years, and
was left most of his uncle's estate. With these means he bought Kentwell

Dare (John Marmaduke, of Cranbrook House, Ilford) & Robert Westley
Hall-Dare, son-in-law of Robert Hall. Memorandums. [Diary & Account
book], 2 vol., manuscripts in two hands, (diary) title and 434pp., (account
book) 106pp. excluding blanks, ruled throughout, last 2ff. cut at head at
end, original green vellum, second mentioned ink title on upper cover, first
mentioned rebacked with the original spine laid down, sm. 4to, 1st January
1792 - 9th September 1804 & 20th July 1829 - 26th April 1831. A detailed
day to day account of life in Essex by a provincial gentleman living at the
end of the eighteenth century. Probably a soldier, Grafton Dare records in
January 1792 that his baggage has arrived in the river and been passed
through customs and on 14th November 1802 that the "1st picture of
Seringapatam came home". Apart from family matters most of the diary is
concerned with activities such as crops, hay, stock, muck spreading, property
maintenance, wine making and bottling port. He also held manor courts at
Theydon Bois and Romford and many local areas are mentioned including
Barking, Romford, Squirrels Heath, Rainham, Southall, Colliers Row etc. While
the vast majority of the diary refers to estate business it also records
Grafton Dare attending the Quarter Sessions in Chelmsford in 1795, attending
a Turnpike meeting in 1794 and becoming a Commissioner of Sewers in 1801 and
a Commissioner for the Land Tax at Romford. Later entries by his son in law
record on 10th November 1829 the misreported death of Sir Eliab Harvey

"THIS
INDENTURE TRIPARTITE made the six and twentieth day of May on Anno Domini
1677 and in the nine and twentieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord
Charles the Second, by the grace of God,of England, Scotland, France and
Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith..." This is a land indenture
between three people whose names appear to be MATTHEW BATEMAN, SAMUEL BERRY
and RICHARD BACON Gentleman of the Middle Temple of London. The name JOHN
HOSKYNS (Hoskins?)is signed at the base. It relates to land at St.Mary *****
Whitechappell (Whitechapel ?) Middlesex Essex and London. HATFIELD BROAD OAK
? and HATFIELD KINGS are also mentioned?? Very hard to read - time needs to
be spent on this document. It is very large, made of real animal hide velum,
and 326 years old. The artistry at the top left is super and is signed in the
swirls by Edw Berry. Two huge wax seals at the base. Mention is made of
stables, arable land, floodings (or shootings?), out buildings etc. The
beautiful swirl on the outside has writing beside it in Latin. It measures 2
foot 7 inches by 2 foot when unfolded. This is an old English rarity made in
the same century as Oliver Cromwells Commonwealth existed! This came with
others from the Bateman family predominantly - many over 150 years later. One
mentions the CRABS GREEN FARM at HATFIELD BROAD OAK, ESSEX, probably the same
place!! (indenture: A duplicate contract, the two halves being cut in a
zig-zag line, which was commonly employed in the early modern period..) |

James
I Writ to Sheriff of Essex - 1611/12. Writ in the name of King James I to the
Sheriff of Essex regarding a final concord concerning the Manor of Dovers
(alias Newhall) in Hornchurch, Essex. A rare early example of a writ refering
to Sir Anthony Aucher and his wife Hester.
Hester inherited half of the manor of Dovers on the death of her
father in 1607. This half was sold in
1612 to Sir Harbottle Grimston Bart.
An endorsement with his name is written on the back of the document.
The document is written in latin on vellum.
A small portion of the lower part of the last sentence is missing, but
most of the text in this last line is just readable. Also two small tears and a natural hole in
the vellum not affecting the text. 3 by 28 cm. |

Huge
animal hide vellum indenture, dated 24 December 1696, five separate sheets,
nine wax seals (three different repeated twice each), hand painted ornate
title, blue William the Third paper seals with a crowned rose on each page.
This document came in an unopened bundle of indentures wrapped in old brown
paper and tied with string. The paper that wrapped them all (not included)
has the following written on it: CRABBS GREEN OLD DEEDS AD 1640/1850. I have
25 including this one - there were 26. There were paper things and letters
among them also. I have sold one from the 17th century, so this is the second
to go. I intend to list the rest in groups mostly because I find I am pulling
my hair out trying to decipher them!!! Here goes for this one: THIS INDENTURE
QUADRUPARTITE MADE THE FOUR AND TWENTIETH DAY OF DECEMBER ANNO DOM 1696 IN
THE EIGHTH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF OUR SOVEREIGN LORD WILLIAM THE THIRD BY THE
GRACE OFGOD OF ENGLAND & SCOTLAND & FRANCE AND IRELAND & KING

AND HEIR APPARAENT OF THE SAID MATTHEW BATEMAN OF THE FIRST PARTE. JOHN
REYOLDS OF THE PARISH OF HATFIELD BROADOAK AT HATFIELD KINGS IN THE COUNTY OF
ESSEX YEOMAN AND HENRY STAINES GENTLEMAN ON THE SECOND PARTE. PETER PICKARD
OF THE SAID PARISH OF ST MARY MALTESSAN? AT WHITE CHAPPELL ESQUIRE AND SARAH
PICKARD DAUGHTER OF THE SAID PETER PICKARD OF THE THIRD PARTE. AND THOMAS
COOKE OF ST DYONIMO BARK CHURCH LONDON CLERK AND VEBAN SMALL? OF CLASPHAM IN
THE COUNTY OF SURREY ESQUIRE IN THE FOURTH PARTE. WHEREAS A MARRIAGE IS
INTENDED SHORTLY BY GODS GRACE TO BE HAD AND SOLOMIZED BETWEEN THE SAID
THOMAS BATEMAN AND SARAH PICKARD, NOW THIS INDENTURE WITNESSES THAT FOR AND
IN CONSIDERATION OF THE SUM OF THREE HUNDRED POUNDS OFLAWFUL MONEY OF ENGLAND
TO HIM THE SAID MATTHEW BATEMAN IN HAND WELL AND TRULY PAID AND SATISFIED BY
THE SAID PETER PICKARD OF AND BEFORE THE ENSEALING AND DELIVERING OF THOSE
PRESENT .............It mentions land, common, pasture, barnes stables,
outhouses, buildings, floodings, meadows etc, and names include RICHARD
CRABB, JOHN REYNOLDS etc. It seems that Crabbs Green farm did perhaps get its
name from this period. 26 by 21 inches. The seals are excellent. |

1649 OLIVER CROMWELL REIGN DEED & 2 OTHERS. 1649 COUNTERPART
DEED, large size, on animal vellum. This is very interesting because it does
not bear the Royal seals that the others have since this was issued in the
period that OLIVER CROMWELL was in charge - difficult times. The other two
items are Indentures dated 1694 and 1696. All three came in a group of about
26 that I have and am selling. They were wrapped in brown paper and old
string and had the following written on the brown paper: CRABBS GREEN OLD
DEEDS AD 1640/1850. Please see the other two that I have also listed. The
1694 one is in Latin. The 1696 one is the only one with wax seals. Names
include SAM QUINTON; THREADNEEDLE STREETE; OLIVER MARTON; CHARLES LEWIS;
PETER BRIDGER; JO REYNOLDS; HENRY STAINES; THOMAS BATEMAN; MATTHEW BATEMAN;
JOHN MERICK; GEO HORTENHUTT?; WILLIAM ANOY?; THOMAS HODGKINS; ESSEX;
WHITECHAPPELL etc etc - see the others because I think they are all concerned
with the same place. Charming items. One man signs an H - THE MARK OF JOHN
HODGKINS..! I think the jist is that due to an impending marriage the
indentures were made to cover the use of or rent of the land?? I am listing
these in groups now because it would be nice that some stay together since
they all apparently relate to the same place through over 200 years - this
group are the last of the 17th century ones. |
