Lord Cartaret Estates, Cornwall Accounts. These three documents contain fascinating detail, including names, places, and occupations of a lot of people in the manors of Stanbury, North Lee and Woodford, Kilkhampton, Stratton and Binhamy, and Widemouth. They begin with a list of bills paid to local craftsmen like Richard Hopgood, the smith, Mr Martyn, the mason, and Nick Bayley, for digging out a pit.

There is a long list of rent arrears in both years such as the Rev Charles Dayman owing £3 18s for the Bude Inn, Summerlease, and John Sheppard owing 2s for a house and garden in Maiden Street, Stratton.

The list of Heriots, monies due on the death of residents, provide a record of the deaths of many people, such as Catherine Trick, July 1815, Lawrence Tucker, June 1814, and James Finney, February 1815.

These documents are somewhat fragile, the 1818 has been slightly nibbled by a mouse and some of the shillings and pence figures lost, the 1817 accounts obviously provided a mouse banquet, but the amount of information lost is small, the damage being restricted to the bottom of each page. The 1816 accounts are in quite good condition.

Granville Estate, N Cornwall/Devon, Rent Book from 1882 This is a 38 page document measuring 13x8 inches each page, giving a record of the rents paid for houses, cottages, tenaments, fields, barns, farms, etc., all around the Kilkhampton area. For example, a William Pethwick paid £7 a year for Lee Wood cottage and lands, and Samuel Walkey paid 10s for Shearms House and shop in Kilkhampton.

This is a fascinating record that will enable historians and genealogists to accurately place a very large number of people who were living in this area. Please ask if you want to know if any particular names are listed.

The document is in fair condition with very little staining, and everything in it is legible, given the difficulty of reading the old-style handwriting. It is a working document with lots of annotations and comments showing when money was paid (or not!) and changes during the year.

A Collection of Victorian Letters. This correspondence is between John Ashleigh, Arthur Ashleigh and Mrs Ashleigh. The address in Cornwall is Menabilly, Par Station. There are various London addresses. These are very tiny envelopes, mostly about 3" x 5", some with seals. There are 10 letters, one lacks an envelope. These appear to be personal letters between members of the family. They are quite difficult to read due to the handwriting. There is some discoloration, and the envelopes are a bit worn. The letters are in good condition.

William Johnson Cory (1823-1892), English schoolmaster and author, son of Charles Johnson of
Torrington, Devonshire, was born on the 9th of January 1823. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. At Cambridge he gained the chancellor's medal for an English poem on Plato in 1843, and the Craven Scholarship in 1844. In 1845, after graduating at the university, he was made an assistant master at Eton, where he remained for some twenty-six years. He has been called "the most brilliant Eton tutor of his day." He had a great influence on his pupils, and he defended the Etonian system against the criticism of Matthew James Higgins. In 1872, having inherited an estate at Halsdon and assumed the name of Cory, he left Eton. He married late in life, and after four years spent in Madeira he settled in 1882 at Hampstead. He died in June 1892. He proved his genuine lyrical power in a publication called Ionica (1858), which was republished with some additional poems in 1891. He also produced Lucretilis (1871), a work on the writing of Latin verses; Iophon (1873), on Greek Iambics; and Guide to Modern History from 1815 to 1835 (1882). Extracts from the Letters and Journals of William Cory, which contains much paradoxical and suggestive criticism, were edited by F.W. Cornish and published by private subscription in 1897.

Charles Wellington Johnson Furse (1821-1900) brother of William Johnson Cory, who, on the death of his father in 1854, took the name of Furse, was canon and archdeacon of
Westminster from 1894 till his death. The artist Charles 'Wellington Furse, A.R.A. (1868-1904), was a son of Archdeacon Furse.
