peppercorn and is made so that the purchaser of the property, Thomas Hulme will be in the actual possession of the property on
the following day and so the Conveyance of the property can be made under
what is termed "the Statute made for transferring uses into
possession" This is a particularly nice item as often the documents have
become separated over the years and it is not that common for the two
documents to have survived together for such a long time. The property
concerned is land at Kent Green in Odd Rode, in the parish of Astbury, Cheshire.

I
don't think that this is paper so could be vellum as it it
quite thick and does not show any watermarks.
It is 18.5 inches across and 10.5 inches high and the bottom 1.5
inches has been folded over to enable a course ribbon to be threaded through
which is then secured with a wax seal to the centre of the fold. There are also two co-joined "VI
PENCE" embossed stamps in blue affixed to the left hand margin, the
reverse of this strip has a lead strip threaded through it that goes through
to the other side, this is then covered with the printed seal as show at the
bottom of the page. I
think it says "This indenture made the fourteenth day of April in the
twelfth year of the Reign of our Sovereigne Lady Anne
by the grace of God of Great Britain and Ireland Queen Defender of the faith
Anno Domini 1713 Between William Davenport the elder of Nantwich ....."

vellum DEED RAILWAY Benbow CHESHIRE LINES 1868.
CHESHIRE RAILWAY INTEREST BEING THE ASSIGNMENT OF LAND AND HEREDITAMENTS IN
THE TOWNSHIP OF HARTFORD IN THE COUNTY OF CHESTER .
BETWEEN JOHN BENBOW OF HARTFORD IN THE COUNTY OF CHESTER OF THE PART AND THE
CHESHIRE LINES COMMITTEE OF THE OTHER PART. WITH REFERENCE TO THE WEST
CHESHIRE RAILWAY COMPANY , THE GREAT NORTHERN, THE MANCHESTER SHEFFIELD AND
LINCOLNSHIRE AND THE MIDLAND RAILWAY COMPANIES The
joint committee was formed in 1865 taking control of the existing Stockport
& Woodley Junction Railway, the Cheshire Midland Railway, the Stockport Timperley and Altrincham Junction Railway and the West
Cheshire Railway. Each of the three large companies held a one third share in
the resulting joint operation. The Cheshire Lines Transfer Act of 1865
established the company and gave it the powers to build a new line to
Liverpool, eventually linking Manchester Central Station with Liverpool
Central Station (where the company offices were located) with a line passing
through Glazebrook and Warrington. The CLC operated
into Liverpool docks, initially to Garston and Brunswick, later building a
new line to the north of the city to connect with a new freight terminal at Huskisson (the Liverpool North Extension Lines). A branch
was taken from Halewood to Southport and from Glazebrook
they built a line to Stockport & Godley Junction on the Great Central
Manchester-Sheffield line.. IN

This
document is an Exchequer Order from 1683 (reign of Charles II) and is rare in
that it is handwritten in English ( earlier examples
were written entirely in Latin and most 18th century examples were partly
printed). The Lower Court of Exchequer or Exchequer of Receipt was set up in
medieval times to record the collection of the Kings taxes and distribute
money under Acts of Parliament or under the Great Seal or Letters of Privy
Seal. It was eventually abolished in the 19th century . This
particular order reads : Bishop
of Chester for the Kings Preachery in Lancashire
Order is taken this 9th day of November 1683. By virtue of his M(ajest)ys l(ette)res
of Privy Seale dated the 6th day of December 1675.That you deliver & pay
of such his M(ajest)ys
Treasure as remains in your charge unto the right Reverend Father in God John
Lord Bishop of Chester or his assignes the sume of foure hundreds pounds
Upon the sum of £200 per Annum for the use of such foure
preachery as shalbe
nominated by the said bishop of Chester for the time being comonly called the Kings Preachery
that is to say £50 per Annum to each of them. And is for twoe
yeares of the said allowance ending at Lady Day
1682. And there together with his Lopps [Letters of
Privy Seale ? ] or his assignees Acquittance shalbe y(ou)r discharge herein Underneath
is written in various other hands: Sir
Tho Vernon I pray pay this order out of Loane on H-----[ text missing] Ex(aminatur)e : Recordatur XXIX o
[29th] die Novemb(er)
1683 1111c£ [shorthand for £400]: Vernon On
reverse is a receipt for the money signed by Henry Dove. Possibly Henry Dove
DD (1640-1695) Archdeacon and Court Chaplain who would act as the Bishop of
Chester’s ‘assigne’ The
right hand margin of the Order is trimmed with missing signatures(
see below). Top and bottom of Order is worn with small tears. Otherwise
condition is good with light toning in places ( exaggerated
on scans) Laid paper has watermark. This
is an order to the Exchequer to pay the Bishop a long overdue amount
originally authorised by Letters of Privy Seal. Having probably been signed
by The Lords of the Treasury the Order would be passed to The Auditor of
Receipt who would examine order and write ‘ Ex(amimum)
per’ followed by his signature in lower right hand corner. The ‘Ex’ is just visible . The Auditor of Receipt at that time was Robert
Howard (1626-1698) Royalist soldier and dramatist. He then wrote the line ’ I pay pray this order …..‘ and sent it to the
Exchequer of Receipt in Whitehall Palace . There Sir Thomas Vernon one of
four Tellers of the Exchequer has inserted his name before this second last line
and then issued the money and obtained a receipt. The Order and Receipt would
then be recorded on a parchment roll by a Clerk and the last line in Latin
was added according to ancient custom. In
1683 there were limited funds in he
Exchequer. Charles had dissolved Parliament and the large amounts of money he
was receiving from Louis IV of France were probably put into other places
where he could withdraw the money at will.
The Bishop of Chester at that
time was John Pearson (1612-1686), formerly Master of Trinity College
Cambridge, who was one of the foremost scholars of the day. Pearson seemed to
want the money to convert the heathen of Lancashire ( preachery = preaching)! |
