Blacksmith. The ledger of a blacksmith living and
working in Swaffam Bulbeck,
Cambridgeshire, covering the period 1836-1850, 460
page manuscript in ink, original boards with vellum covers bearing various
slash marks (presumably when the book was used as a flat surface for
scoring), some slight watermarking to a few pages but in generally fine
condition, folio. A fascinating insight into an important vernacular trade
situated near the home of horse racing. Swaffam Bulbeck lies between Cambridge and Newmaket
and close to the important horse race training area of Six Mile Bottom. The
blacksmith, probably named Evanhart, covered a wide
area as the ledger mentions the villages of Burwell, Botisham,
Isleham, Swaffam, Wilbraham. The majority of entries cover work carried out
for horses and it is most probable that he was one of the main farriers for the horse racing stables in the area. There
are also references for work carried out for local workhouses and churches.
Many customers appear to be long term and they include General (later Field
Marshall) Grosvenor. |
