Explanation of Some Terms Used

 

 

Trundle Bedsteedle

A low bed running on trundles, or small wheels, which could be pushed under a high or standing bed when not in use

 

Pelwooll

Wool, clearly different from fleece wool, but not identified

 

Forme

A bench

 

Presse

A large cupboard with doors and usually shelves, for keeping clothes, linen, books etc; sometimes placed in a recess in a wall

 

Court Cupboord

Open three-tier structure of shelving, the two front supports usually turned and the cornice carved; sometimes had a narrow drawer under the middle shelf. Later, doors enclosed the lower tier. Plate, pewter and earthenware were displayed on it

 

Tymber Chayne

Not identified, possibly used for hauling timber

 

Kneading Trough

Wooden trough in which dough was kneaded

 

Spuddling

To spuddle was to loosen earth around plants with a spud. This is a Kentish dialect word.

 

Shootes

Young pigs

 

Scuppet

A large wooden shovel used in the hop oasts; a shovel consisting of a wooden frame (the ‘fanne’?) covered with canvas used for scuppeting the hops. Another Kentish dialect word.
