A huge archive of 152 items relating primarily to the Wainman family and lands in the Keighley area of Yorkshire - also featuring many more people. Various vellum items, important documents, letters, and a number of hand drawn maps, many by the surveyor John Redman. Such 18th century maps are very rare. Condition variable but all items are complete and generally in excellent condition for the period.
1.& 2. 1574. Vellum, the word Harden noticed, in latin. All legible. No Seal, but with another vellum document joined and within this one, joined by the redundant vellum seal tags. The inner document in old English, no date, certainly 16th century or possibly late 15th?
3. 1629. Vellum. Large indenture, with wax seal and signatures. Relating to Carbie - a main house and stable etc. Various persons named. The seal of Bannon (or similar name.)
4. 1657. An agreement on vellum, Ganesbrough, between various persons, primarily ?Storfexetti, Wharton, Thomas, Chapman, Coffam, and others. Before Oliver St. John, Edward Assyns, Matthew Hale, Hugh Wyndham 'and others'.
5. 1669. Vellum. An obligation, no seal. Very difficult writing to read.
6. 1682. Unusual small obligation on vellum, written on both sides, different hands, two strips cut on one edge with paper entwined seals. Concerning Robert Parker and his wife Grace, and various names and signatures - various places named too, all in York or Yorkshire - this was among the archive so likely relates in some aspect.
7. 1689. Vellum. Christopher Robinson to John Cowgill, feofment. A large document with a beautiful hand drawn inital letter T and surrounding design. Parish of Thornton, no seal.
8. 1689. A strip of vellum, titled: "A true and proper inventory of the personal estate of William Wharton late of ********ford in the County of Nottingham....." plate, hay, malt etc.
9. 1699. Vellum. Involving Abraham Jackson, Scarbrough and Parkinson. No seal.
10. 1706. Vellum. No seal, very difficult untidy writing to read, one name being John Wooler.
11. 1707. Vellum. John Cowgill to John Bradley. Mortgage by Feofment. Carrhead in Cowling, with a black wax seal.
12. 1718. Vellum. Cowgill to Ellen Hartley and Ann Hartley ats Cowgill. Ffeofment.
13. 1725. Vellum. Ellen Hartley and daughter - lease...John Bradley. Appears to relate to the farming of cotton. Two red wax seals of a lion rampant.
14. 1725. Paper. Mr. Bawdwen & Mr. Bradley....to Alison Hartley and her daughter. Much splitting of fold lines, two red wax seals as last.
15. 1725. Vellum. Ellen Hartley and Ann Hartley..Cowgill to John Bradley. Release. Two red seals as last.
16. 1741. Vellum. Ellen Hartley, Ann Bolton and John Bradley to Richd. Harper - mortgage for 1000 years. Three red wax rampant lion seals.
17. 1771. Small piece of paper with 11 lines of text concerning the canal, fields and an aqueduct.
18. c.1773. Small statement re the Proprietors of the Navigation from Leeds to Liverpool - re cattle straying, a bridge etc.
19. 1773. An ornately written double-page item - by a surveyor named ?P. Simpson, titled "Loss of herbage caused by the Canal and banks to Mr. Thornton's tenants - proportioned and settled as under for each item."
20. 1773. An ornately written small sheet of paper titled "The measurement of the land the property of Mr. Thornton now taken for the use of the canal from Liverpool to Leeds. Signed as measured by ?P. or ?S. Simpson & McOwen.
21. 1773. An ornately written small sheet of paper titled "The measurement of John Brogdens Close below the Canal." Signed as measured by ?P. or ?S. Simpson & McOwen.
22. 1775. Large paper document, one shillings embossed tax stamp, relating to Robert Blaksley of the city of York, carver and gilder, and his wife Martha - release for legacy. The Blaksley seal twice (a bearded mans head facing left) and signatures.
23. 1777. "A note of the Mason Work done for Wm. Wainman esq. at Carhead by Willm. Smith, Jno. Morehouse & Co. Various interesting work, including "Helping to loaden stones on the moor."
24. 1780. Bill for ironwork to Wm. Wainman Esq., by Thos. Holden. Includes a bath stove, iron work for stair case and bells.
25. 1780. Large paper discharge document, discharge no. 35, with a 20 shillings embossed tax stamp, relating to the subject having received their legacy from the estate of Elizabeth Fell. This one relating to John Raper, with his wax seal and signatures.
26. 1780. Large paper discharge document, discharge no.40, with a 2 shillings 6 pence embossed tax stamp, relating to the subject having received their legacy from the estate of Elizabeth Fell. This one relating to Elizabeth Tidswell, menial servant to Eizabth Fell, with a wax seal of a female head and signatures.
27. 1780. Marbled boards covered book, with manuscript entries over 14 pages, by the executors and concerning the last will and testament of Mrs. Elizabeth Fell. Many interesting items, particularly concerning the funeral.
28. 1781. Large paper discharge document, discharge number 46, with a 20 shillings embossed tax stamp, relating to the subject having received their legacy from the estate of Elizabeth Fell. This one relating to Mr. and Mrs. Wainman, with their seal twice (a Cockerel head), and signatures.
29. 1781/82. Account - "George Townend in account with William Wainman Esq. and his wife respecting the interest received on securities belonging to the late Mrs. Fell." Two pages, signed by Townend.
30. 1782. Account - "George Townend in account with William Wainman Esq. and Mrs Wainman his wife. Two pages, signed by Townend.
31. 1782. Letter, 1 page, to William Wainman, Carr Head, from George Townend, relative to having sent Wainman £200 in Bank of England notes "this being a scarce time of year for cash."
32. 1783. Large paper discharge document, discharge no. 55, with a 20 shillings embossed tax stamp, relating to the subject having received their legacy from the estate of Elizabeth Fell. This one relating to Catherine Graumann, daughter of the testatrix's brother Thomas Marriott, and Hermann Graumann her husband, with their wax seal twice and signatures.
33. 1784. Account - "George Townend in account with William Wainman Esq. and Mrs Wainman his wife the late Miss Eliz. Marriott. Two pages, signed by Townend.
34. 1784. Vellum. Conveyance - Ramsbottom and others to William Dixon Esq. Two cheets, very detailed, with 8 wax seals of Dixon with his cypher initals.
35. 1786. Large sheet of paper with text at the top half relating to a plan benath on the bottom half. Various detailed calculations to "mathematically demonstrate" the areas, and signed off by JR, (John Redman, surveyor.) This relates to Scarbro Ing.
36. 1795. COWLING. Five double sheet items with tables and details concerning various properties, notaions by a surveyor etc.
37. 1796. Large sheet of figures sent to Mr Wainman relating to will of Mrs. Priestley.
38. 1798. Small note signed WW relating to land.
39. 1798. Vellum. John Clough to William Wainman. Assignment. Three wax seals, signatures.
40. 18th century. Measurement of Colne Moor the part belonging to Mr. Wainman. Small piece of paper.
41. 18th century. Slip of paper with notations regarding land on Icornshaw Moss and Mr. Binns, referring to a map no.35.
42. 18th century. Five pages of text concerning various pieces of land, each named with a number and apparently cross referenced to other texts or maps. Signed WW.
43. Possibly late 18th century. Large attractive document, 15 pages, titled "Between Thomas Strother - Plt. Samuel Lister, Richard Todd, Samuel White & Elizabeth his wife, Thomas Stott & Mary his wife, Frances Rawson, William Wainman........Defendents. Brief for the defendent of William Wainman."

46. 1802. Note written and signed by W. Wainman regarding a tenant who had approached him, Luke Lunn.

50. 1805 etc. A pencil written item dated 1805 between Priestley and Waddington; a piece of paper relating to much of the previous titled "Letters and memorandum from different people relating to Shipley .etc."; some Carrhead cards with titles on the back and notches on the sides where they had been tied to bundles to signify the content of the bundle. Two with printed text headed CARRHEAD, and informing the supplier that the bearer of said card should be supplied with the following articles, to be placed on the account of W.B. Wainman. (The written "W" replacing a printed "R" beneath.); a document bag made from an 18th century vellum deed, titled Cowling, 1789.
51. 1806. Memorandum relating to land and persons including a John Smith. Very difficult writing to determine.

53. 1808. Proposals relating to a field, one page.
54. 1808. Icornshaw Lordship. Contract or agreement relating to changes to the 1778 map of Doles on Icornshaw Lordship - many signatures.
55. 1809. Memorandum, written and signed by Wainman, with a small sketch and measurements of fields.
56. C.1810 and later. Five notes titled on the outer one: "Sundries out of my pocket book. One relates to plant species, etc.
57. 1810. Valuation of land for the intended NEW ROAD, 1810. Two sections, "Redshaw Moss" and "Inclosed Land." Large sheet of paper with many names, and columns with value etc. Signed by J. Binns at base.
58. 1810. A list of old measurements from a book of maps, Thornton Parish, Harden.
59. 1810. A large unfolding detailed sheet titled "Proprietors names & quantity of their Doles on Redshaw, Warlewise, & Iccornshaw Mosses, with the expense of surveying, measuring, dividing & mapping the same - 1810." Also titled "Account of measures."
60. 1810. Two page item regarding "Doles on Icornshaw Mosses." - including Jonas Binns and reference to a map.
61. 1810. Signed statement regarding various persons meeting to examine a map of Icornshaw mosses etc. which had been made by Binns - various signatures of the relevant owners.
62. 1810. Signed agreement relating to an advertised meeting to have the doles on Icornshaw Moss etc re-mapped on parchment, with interesting phrase "the same is now set out by cutting up a sod.."
63. 1810. Letter to Wainman from the surveyor J. Binns, Shayhead, regarding meeting Mr. Burton the following Monday - it appears that the intention was to construct a map of certain land.
64. 1810. A large sheet of paper, folded, with two sides titled MOSTON and CLEGGS FARM/HEYS FARM, with field types and names, with other details, both signed by the surveyor J. Binns.
65. 1811. Plan of garden of Iccornshaw belonging to Mr. Wainman - by Binns.
66. 1813. Letter, one page, to Mr.Wainman, Carrhead, from John ?Fickle of Packham, concerning the late Robert Harper and his wife Martha - will related.
67. 1813. Memorandum between William Wainman and Henry Edmundson, also signed by one Ferdinand Scarbrough.
68. 1815. A thick printed act "for inclosing lands within the Township of Sutton in the Parish of Kildwick, in the West Riding of the County of York. [Royal Assent, 7 June 1815.) J. Preston, Solicitor, Skipton.
69. 1815. Letter, 2 pages, to William Wainman, Carr Head, from I.Pering, Vicarage, three pages,concerning land tax and money to be paid at the vicarage - a very financially aware Vicar, who makes the following statement near the end of his letter, "If any inclosure of Common take place, the Vicar is not to be excluded from advantage of it. If you have opportunity, I hope you will try to convince some how very reasonable this composition is, as certain persons still declare they are ready to seek their rights in a court of justice if I am."

75. 1820. Agreement for making a reservoir on Cowling Moor in the county of York. Can & Son, Skipton. Super content regarding the present mills that would be served by the increased water flow, and a new mill, with measured lengths of water drops to each mill.
76. c.1820? Note re the paying of debt and interest of the money borrowed upon the credit of the town and parish of Kighley at the time the church was rebuilt - "To Rich. Wainman esq."

Agreement relating to a meeting held at Middleton Chapel in the township of Cowling, pursuant to legal notice given for the purpose of taking into consideration the necessity of putting a stop to persons getting, leading or otherwise destroying peats.....in Icornshaw Liberty....: the text includes the role for Samuel Gott, Constable.

Mainly concerns Wainman's land transactions, between the Railway etc. The letter begins on the subject of rents: "I have the pleasure of informing you that the Whitsuntide Rent audit has been all you could wish - every tenant appeared and paid up the full rent, excepting the usual case of the Duke of Devonshire whose agent sent after the day to Fisher."
